AMATEUR RADIO: FIRST-LINE COMMUNICATION IN DISASTER

The Honourable Minister of State for Communications, Shri Devusinh Chauhan, stressed the importance of increasing the number of amateur radio operators (HAMs) across India during his inaugural session of HAMFEST India-2023 at Ahmedabad. He highlighted the necessity of having at least one HAM operator in every village and proposed the integration of HAM education into school and college curriculums. In alignment with this vision, The Department of Telecommunication, Wireless Monitoring Station Vijayawada, organized a Seminar, Workshop, and Hands-On Training on Amateur Radio at the Sree Vahini Institute of Science & Technology in Tiruvuru. The event aimed to raise awareness among students about the significance of Amateur Radio (HAM Radio) as a primary communication tool during emergencies and disasters.

The seminar shed light on the significance of Amateur Radio and how it can play a pivotal role in communication when traditional means fail during emergencies. Students were introduced to the fundamentals of HAM Radio operations and learned how this scientific hobby can be harnessed by anyone for the benefit of society, especially during times of crisis.

 

Shri Onkar Nath Yadav , IRRS, Assistant Wireless Advisor also a HAM operator (Callsign VU3OOO) and Shri Abhishek Kumar, Officer in charge of the Wireless Monitoring Station Vijayawada, delivered insightful presentations on Amateur Radio applications ASOC Exam and certification process providing attendees with a comprehensive understanding of the subject matter.

Highlighting the practical aspects of Amateur Radio, Shri Sharat Babu, a HAM radio operator, demonstrated how to operate a HAM Radio station effectively. His demonstration not only showcased the technical aspects but also emphasized the importance of hands-on training in mastering this communication tool.

The seminar received positive feedback from participants, who expressed their eagerness to explore the world of Amateur Radio further. Many students were inspired to consider pursuing HAM Radio as a hobby and contribute to their communities in times of need.

In conclusion, the Seminar Workshop on Amateur Radio organized by the Wireless Monitoring Station Vijayawada served as an enlightening platform for students to understand the potential of HAM Radio in disaster communication. The event not only imparted knowledge but also ignited a passion for scientific exploration and community service among the attendees.
