Urban development is a State subject. However, Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs supports the States/Union Territories in addressing issues related to Urban Development through its Missions viz.  Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) 2.0, Smart Cities Mission (SCM), Swachh Bharat Mission Urban (SBM-U) 2.0, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U) and schemes under Urban Transport. Various initiatives taken through these schemes are focused on providing urban infrastructure, developing green space, sanitation etc. with optimization of environmental balance for sustainable development.
