MoUs for promotion and research of Ayush

The Ministry of Ayush, Govt. of India has signed 25 Country to Country MoUs with different foreign countries and 52 Institute to Institute level MoUs with different international organizations for the promotion and research of Ayush systems. The details are attached to Annexure I and Annexure II respectively.

Ministry of Ayush has taken following initiatives to integrate Ayush practices with modern healthcare systems.

  • Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) Ayush Vertical: The Ayush Vertical under DGHS, established by the Ministry of Ayush and Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), serves as a dedicated institutional mechanism for planning, monitoring, and supervising Ayush-specific public health programs. This vertical provides technical support to both ministries in developing strategies for public health, healthcare, Ayush education, and training. It also functions as a repository of Ayush-based technical knowledge and oversees the management of hospitals, dispensaries, and medical education under the Ministry of Ayush.
  • Development of Standard Treatment Guidelines (STG): A series of STGs within the Ayush system of medicine is being developed by the Ayush Vertical under DGHS. The STGs on 6 common Musculoskeletal Disorders was published in 2024. Recently, STGs on 5 common metabolic disorders - Diabetes Mellitus, Obesity, Gout, Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD), and Dyslipidemia—across the Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy systems, with Yoga integrated with all was released during the NAM Conclave held on May 1-2, 2025. To enhance the capacity of Ayush physicians, Ayush vertical has conducted National Level Master Training in collaboration of Central Health Education Bureau (CHEB) across all States on these developed STGs, ensuring their effective dissemination to end users. These Master Trainers are conducting state level training in a cascading manner.
  • Integrative Departments and extended OPD services in Tertiary Care Hospitals: The Ministry of Ayush and MoHFW have jointly established Integrated Ayush Departments in Central Government Hospitals to promote integrative healthcare. As part of this initiative, the Department of Integrated Medicine has been set up and is operational at Vardhman Mahavir Medical College (VMMC) & Safdarjung Hospital and Lady Hardinge Medical College, New Delhi.

These departments provide preventive, promotive, and therapeutic medical services, including a fully functional Panchakarma unit. Additionally, extended OPD services by Ayush Research Councils are available at VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital, Lady Hardinge Medical College, and Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, New Delhi.

  • Indian Public Health Standards for Ayush healthcare facilities: With the active technical support from the Ayush Vertical under DGHS,  Ministry of Ayush (MoA)  has successfully published and launched the  Indian Public Health Standards (IPHS) for Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (AAMs) (Ayush) and Ayush Hospitals. It is a set of uniform standards for infrastructure, human resources, medicines, and service quality. These standards enable States and UTs to deliver quality Ayush healthcare services.
  • Public Health Advisories: Ministry of Ayush has released two Public Health Advisories on Heat Wave and Monkey Pox in coordination with National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).
  • Ayush-ICMR Advanced Centre for Integrative Health Research (AI-ACIHR): MoU has been signed with ICMR for high-quality research on integrative medicine, aiming to formalize integrative healthcare delivery and support policy recommendations through AI-ACIHR. Joint efforts are in place to conduct high-quality clinical trials on identified areas/disease conditions of national importance with promising integrative therapies to generate evidence for wider acceptance. 5 such centres have been set up at 4 AIIMS viz., AIIMS Delhi (Gastro-intestinal Disorders and Women and Child Health), AIIMS Jodhpur (Geriatric Health), AIIMS Nagpur (Cancer Care), AIIMS Rishikesh (Geriatric Health).
  • Collaborative Research with Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR): The Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS) under Ministry of Ayush and ICMR has undertaken a research study on Anaemia entitled “Efficacy and safety of Punarnavadi Mandura alone and in combination with Drakshavaleha compared to iron folic acid in the treatment of moderate iron deficiency anaemia among non-pregnant women of reproductive age group”: a community-based three arm multi-center randomized controlled trial. The study is being carried out at 8 different sites namely MGIMS Wardha, AIIMS Jodhpur, NITM Bengaluru, RIMS Ranchi, KEM Hospital Research Centre, AIIMS New Delhi, AIIMS Bhopal, and AIIMS Bibinagar.
  • Integrated Education: Yoga training is now integrated into the undergraduate medical (MBBS) curriculum. Additionally, a mandatory one-week internship in Ayush has been incorporated into the one-year compulsory internship for medical undergraduates. The Nursing Council of India has introduced a one-year Post Basic Nursing Diploma in Ayush.

Leading institutions like the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) offer interdisciplinary education and postgraduate (PG) and Ph.D. courses in integrative healthcare.

  • One Health approach: It exemplifies integration, adopting a holistic perspective that encompasses human, animal and environmental health, recognizing their interconnectedness. The One Health Committee, led by the Principal Scientific Adviser (PSA), embodies this unified approach, providing seamless and comprehensive care that extends to planetary well-being.

The number of Homeopathy, Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha and Sowa-Ripga practitioners registered with National Commission for Homoeopathy (NCH) and National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM) is attached at Annexure III and Annexure IV.

The budget allocation of Ministry of Ayush during past five years is attached at Annexure V.
