Promotion of integrative cancer care in the country

The research councils namely, Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy (CCRH), Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS), Central Council for Research in Yoga & Naturopathy (CCRYN) & Central Council for Research in Siddha (CCRS) and National Institutes namely, All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA) & Institute of Teaching and Research in Ayurveda (ITRA) under the aegis of Ministry of Ayush are promoting integrative cancer care combining modern medicine with evidence-based Ayush therapies for improving patient outcomes.

Under Centre of Excellence component of Ayurswasthya Yojana of the Ministry of Ayush, following 02 projects are supported for integrative cancer care combining modern medicine with evidence-based Ayush therapies for improving patient outcomes:

Arya Vaidya Sala, Kottakkal project titled, "Setting up CoE in Cancer Research Arya Vaidya Sala, Kottakkal” with total amount of Rs.6,64,45,170/- sanctioned and fund of Rs.5,31,56,136/- is released.

Tata Memorial Centre, (TMC) Mumbai project titled, "Centre of Excellence for Discovery and Development of Ayush Medicine for Cancer Care" with total amount of Rs.9,06,91,262/- sanctioned and fund of Rs. 3,94,10,182/ - is released.

The details of ongoing initiative taken by the Ministry are as follows:

The Centre of Integrative Oncology, a joint initiative of the All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA), New Delhi and National Institute of Cancer Prevention and Research - Indian Council of Medical Research (NICPR-ICMR), Noida, operates an Integrative Cancer Care Unit (ICCU) at AIIA, where patients receive treatment through integrative medical approaches.

The Centre for Ayurveda and Integrative Oncology (CAIO) has also been established as a collaborative effort between AIIA, the Ministry of Ayush, and NCI-AIIMS Jhajjar. An OPD unit is functioning under this centre, offering services that include Panchakarma therapies.

Central Ayurveda Research Institute (CARI), CCRAS, Mumbai focusing on cancer research & care.

Special Cancer Clinic at National Institute of Ayurveda (NIA), Jaipur.

AIIA-Goa is also running an Integrative Oncology Research & Care centre in joint collaboration with Goa Medical College and the Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research and Education in Cancer (ACTREC)-TMC, Mumbai.

CCRYN in collaboration with PGI Chandigarh under the Collaborative Centre in Mind Body Intervention through Yoga (CCMBIY) is promoting integrative cancer care combining modern medicine with evidence-based Yoga therapies for improving patient outcomes by conducting research on cancer through Yoga.

Further, as per the information received from Directorate of Homoeopathy, Govt. of Kerala, under the State Palliative Care Project in Kerala, the Department of Homoeopathy runs a dedicated ‘Pain and Palliative Cancer Care Centre’ at Wandoor, Malappuram. Primary palliative care services are offered through 709 Government Homoeopathy Dispensaries and 409 Ayush Primary Health Centres in Kerala delivering home-based care for cancer and chronically ill patients. Secondary palliative care services are also provided in 33 homeopathy hospitals in Kerala with inpatient care and home visits.

  The details of the research studies undertaken to assess the efficacy of Ayush-based adjuvant therapies in cancer management are annexed.

To provide better integrative cancer care in Andhra Pradesh, the CCRH with Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare conducted a pilot project from May 2017 to May 2020 in Krishna district, Andhra Pradesh and Darjeeling, West Bengal. In this project, Homoeopathy and Yoga were used along with the national programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer Diabetes Cardiovascular Diseases and Stroke (NPCDCS). Also, in Tirupati, the Siddha Clinical Research Unit with Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) is providing an integrative approach to support cancer patients.
