Promotion of AYUSH

The first exclusive All-India survey on Ayush was conducted by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) during July, 2022 to June, 2023 as a part of the National Sample Survey 79th Round. The survey found out that awareness of the Ayush system of medicine stands at 94.8% in rural areas and 96% in urban areas, while 46.3% of rural people and 52.9% of urban people reported using Ayush for the prevention or treatment of ailments during the past 365 days. According to the National Sample Survey 79th Round, the most prominent reasons reported by the households who have used Ayush during last 365 days are found to be following:

  • 7 out of 10 households believe that Ayush medicines are effective
  • 6 out of 10 households have faith or believe in Ayush
  • 5 out of 10 households believe side effects are negligible
  • 4 out of 10 households used Ayush because of
  • satisfying previous experiences, or
  • the raw materials are easily available, or
  • it was well known to local people
  • 3 out of 10 households used Ayush because of
  • tradition or culture of using Ayush, or
  • the fact that Ayush strengthens and revitalizes body, or
  • Ayush medicines are inexpensive
  • 2 out of 10 households used Ayush because of
  • availability of individualized personal care in Ayush, or
  • overall well-being/complete care

Further, National Ayush Mission- Ministry of Ayush is implementing Centrally Sponsored Scheme of National Ayush Mission (NAM) through State/ UT government and support them by providing financial assistance for promotion & development of Ayush systems.

Major Activities from 2014-15 to 2024-25 supported under National Ayush Mission -

  • 203 units supported for setting up of Integrated Ayush hospitals.
  • 518 Ayush Hospitals and 6234 Ayush dispensaries have been supported for Up-gradation of infrastructure and other facilities.
  • 2387 PHCs, 746 CHCs and 319 DHs have been supported under co-location for recurring assistance of medicines and contingency on an average in each year.
  • 1157 Ayush Hospitals and 12677 Ayush dispensaries have been supported for supply of essential Ayush medicines on an average in each year.
  • 21 units supported for establishment of New Ayush Educational Institutions.
  • 78 Under-Graduate and 46 Post-Graduate Ayush Educational Institutes have been supported for Upgradation of infrastructure, Library and other things.
  • 383 units supported for establishment of New Ayush Dispensaries.
  • 1429 Ayush Grams have been supported.
  • 12500 Ayush Dispensaries/Health Sub Health Centres have been upgraded to Ayushman Arogya Mandir (Ayush). Further, as reported by State/UT Governments 33.95 Cr beneficiaries availed services from these Centers from 2022-23 to 2024-25.
  • Under different Ayush Public Health Programs 39642 Units have been supported from 2022-23 to 2024-25. As reported by State/UT Governments 18.95 lakhs beneficiaries availed services under these Ayush Public Health Programs during 2024-25.

Ministry of Ayush is implementing Centrally Sponsored scheme of National Ayush Mission (NAM) for overall development & promotion of Ayush systems of medicine in the country by providing financial assistance to them for different activities proposed through State Annual Action Plans (SAAPs) as per the provisions of NAM guideline.

The Mission inter-alia makes provision for following activities:

  1. Operationalization of Ayush Health & Wellness Centres (AHWCs), now renamed as Ayushman Arogya Mandir (Ayush), by upgrading existing Ayush dispensaries and Sub health Centres.
  2. Co-location of Ayush facilities at Primary Health Centres (PHCs), Community Health Centres (CHCs) and District Hospitals (DHs)
  3. Upgradation of existing standalone Government Ayush Hospitals
  4. Upgradation of existing Government/Panchayat/Government aided Ayush Dispensaries/ Construction of building for existing Ayush Dispensary (Rented/dilapidated accommodation) /Construction of building to establish new Ayush Dispensary.
  5. Setting up of 10/30/50 bedded integrated Ayush Hospitals
  6. Supply of essential drugs to Government Ayush Hospitals, Government Dispensaries and Government/Government aided Teaching Institutional Ayush Hospitals.
  7. Ayush Public Health Programs.
  8. Establishment of new Ayush colleges in the States where availability of Ayush teaching institutions is inadequate in Government Sector.
  9. Infrastructural development of Ayush Under-Graduate Institutions and Ayush Post - Graduate Institutions/add on PG/ Pharmacy/Para-Medical Courses.

Ministry of Ayush implements a Central Sector Scheme namely Ayurgyan Scheme with the aim to support Research & Innovation in Ayush through Extra Mural Research activities and Education by providing academic activities, training, capacity building etc. The scheme has three components viz. (i) Capacity Building & Continuing Medical Education (CME) in Ayush (ii) Research & Innovation in Ayush and (iii) Ayurveda Biology Integrated Health Research (ABIHR).

Ministry of Ayush implements the Central Sector Scheme namely Ayurswasthya Scheme with the aim to support creative and innovative proposals for establishment and up-gradation of both functions and facilities of reputed institutions to strengthen competencies of Ayush professionals in Education technology, Research & innovation and such other fields necessary for promotion of Ayush at national as well as international level through its component viz Centre of Excellence (CoE).

Ministry of Ayush also implements the Central Sector Scheme for Promotion of Information Education and Communication (IEC) in Ayush to create awareness regarding Ayush system of medicines. This scheme aims to reach out to all sections of the population across the country. It provides assistance for organizing National/ State Arogya Fairs, Yoga Fests/ Utsavs, Ayurveda Parvs, etc. The Ministry also undertakes Multi-Media, Print Media Campaigns for creating awareness about the Ayush systems.

Apart from this, under Ministry of Ayush, there are 05 Research Councils, 12 National Institutes, 02 Commissions i.e. National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM) & National Commission for Homoeopathy (NCH), Pharmacopoeia Commission for Indian Medicine & Homoeopathy (PCIM&H) (Subordinate office) and Indian Medicines Pharmaceutical Corporation Limited (IMPCL) (Public Sector Undertaking).
