Advance Research in Ayurveda

Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS), an autonomous organization under Ministry of Ayush has undertaken collaborations with national and international institutions to strengthen scientific validation of Ayurveda. The list of ongoing collaborative projects with National institutes such as Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS), Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) etc are attached as Annexure -I

CCRAS, in collaboration ICMR have jointly initiated the establishment of Ayush-ICMR Advanced Centres for Integrative Health Research (AI-ACIHR) at various AIIMS institutes to conduct research in identified areas under the Extra Mural Research Scheme of ICMR. The details of these centres are as follows:

•AIIMS Delhi:

    • Advanced Centre for Integrative Health Research in Gastro-intestinal Disorders.

    • Advanced Centre for Integrative Health Research in Women and Child Health.

•AIIMS Jodhpur:- Advanced Centre for Integrative Health Research in Geriatric Health.

•AIIMS Nagpur:- Advanced Centre for Integrative Health Research in Cancer Care.

•AIIMS Rishikesh:- Advanced Centre for Integrative Health Research in Geriatric Health.

A clinical research project entitled “Effectiveness and safety of Ayurveda as a whole treatment system in Osteoarthritis of the knee-A Multicenter, randomized controlled clinical trial based on Traditional Ayurveda Diagnosis” was undertaken in collaboration with Charite University Medical Centre, Germany. The project was carried out during 2010-2015 and the outcomes has been published in peer reviewed journals.

With the view to fulfil the mandate of propagation of Ayush System of Healthcare, the Ministry of Ayush implements a Central Sector Scheme for Promotion of Information Education and Communication (IEC) in Ayush. Under this Scheme, Ministry organises National/ State level Arogya Fairs, Yoga Fests/ Utsavs, Ayurveda Parvs, celebrate important days of Ayush system, participate in Health fairs/ melas, Exhibitions etc, provide financial assistance for organising seminars, workshops, conferences and conduct multimedia campaigns etc. to create awareness among citizens regarding Ayush system of health care  

The Ministry has also developed a Central Sector Scheme for the Promotion of International Co-operation in Ayush (IC Scheme) under which Ministry provides support to Indian Ayush drug Manufacturers/ Ayush Service providers to give boost to the export of Ayush products & services; facilitates the International promotion, development and recognition of Ayush system of medicine; foster interaction of stakeholders and market development of Ayush at international level; promote academics and research through the establishment of Ayush Academic Chairs in foreign countries and holding training workshop/symposiums for promoting and strengthening awareness and interest about Ayush Systems of Medicine at international level.

The Ministry of Ayush, Govt. of India has signed 25 Country to Country MoUs with different foreign countries and 52 Institute to Institute level MoUs with different international organizations for the promotion and research of Ayush systems. The details are attached to Annexure II and Annexure III respectively.

Collaboration between Ayush institutes and national/international bodies creates new opportunities in research, clinical studies, pharmacology, public health, and digital health. It also opens opportunities for research fellows, scientists, data analysts, and project managers.
