(d) The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD), Government of India is implementing the Livestock Insurance initiative under the Centrally Sponsored National Livestock Mission (NLM) across all districts of the country. In order to increase coverage, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD), Government of India has increased subsidy benefits from 5 cattle unit to 10 cattle units per household for all animals except pigs and rabbits, where the limit is 5 cattle units (1 cattle unit equalling 10 small animals). To improve affordability, the farmer’s share of the insurance premium has been simplified and reduced from a range 20 to 50% earlier to a uniform 15%. The remaining 85% of the premium is jointly funded by the Centre and States in a 60:40 ratio for the states, and 90:10 for the Himalayan and North-Eastern regions. As per State Government, awareness program is being carried out among farmers/ livestock owners about benefits of livestock insurance. Sensitization program were taken up among veterinary officers and field staff to increase livestock insurance coverage.
This information was given by Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Minister Shri Rajiv Ranjan Singh alias Lalan Singh in the Lok Sabha in response to a question asked.
