Upgradation of ITI Infrastructure

The Directorate General of Training (DGT) under the aegis of Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship (MSDE) runs the Craftsmen Training Scheme (CTS), implemented mainly through the Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs). The ITIs are under the administrative and financial control of the respective State Governments. However, DGT has supported the upgradation of ITIs as per the needs highlighted by State/UT Governments through various schemes, such as the Upgradation of Existing Government ITIs into Model ITIs and the Skill Strengthening for Industrial Value Enhancement (STRIVE) Scheme. A Tracer Study to assess employment outcomes of ITI pass outs from Skills Strengthening for Industrial Value Enhancement (STRIVE) Scheme was conducted in 2024, wherein one of the parameter for the study was modernisation of infrastructure of ITIs. Further, as per the study report 78.8 percent of the respondents expressed satisfaction with the infrastructure at ITI.

Under STRIVE, a total financial assistance of Rs. 25.88 crore was provided to the State of Andhra Pradesh for the upgradation of 15 ITIs. Additionally, the State-wise details of fund release under the Upgradation of Existing Government ITIs into Model ITIs scheme are placed at Annexure I.

Upgradation of curricula for ITI training programmes is a continuous process and is generally undertaken every three years. During the last five years, 21 Craftsmen Training Scheme (CTS) courses, 15 short-term courses 17 Flexi-MoU courses and one Craft Instructor Training Scheme (CITS) have been developed and approved by National Council for Vocational Education and Training (NCVET). Additionally, 40 CTS courses have been revised and approved to further align training with industry requirements. The list is attached at Annexure II.

Under CTS, 32 New Age Courses, including Green Hydrogen Production Technician and Internet of Things Technician, have been introduced in ITIs. The enrolment of trainees in ITIs across the country in the New Age Courses has increased from 8,611 in session 2022-23 to 42,338 in session 2025-26. The list of these 32 New Age Courses is at Annexure III.
