Eastern Railway’s  bio-toilets across its fleet, marking a significant milestone in the commitment to environmental sustainability and passenger comfort. The adoption of bio-toilets, conceptualised in collaboration with DRDE (Defence Research Development Establishment) since 2006, reflects Eastern Railway's dedication to modernizing its facilities while minimizing environmental impact.

Recognising the initial challenges of choking and foul odours due to improper waste disposal, proactive measures were taken to address passenger awareness. Instructions displayed prominently in coaches, informative stickers on lavatory doors, and regular announcements have all contributed to educating passengers on the proper use of bio-toilets. Moreover, the continuous evolution of bio-toilet design, incorporating innovations such as the transition from P-trap to S-trap systems and the introduction of Venturi type toilet ventilation, has been undertaken to eliminate foul odours. In ongoing efforts to enhance passenger comfort, Eastern Railway has developed and implemented Bio-Vacuum toilet systems, further reducing odour and facilitating efficient waste management onboard.

Presently, Eastern Railway has bio toilets in 116 Mail/Express trains and 86 Passenger trains with 14360 Bio banks in 3990 Coaches. To ensure cleanliness and functionality en route, the dedicated On Board Housekeeping Staff (OBHS) have been sensitized to maintain hygiene standards and promptly address any issues encountered by passengers.

With bio- toilets now operational across Eastern Railway, the pledge is reaffirmed to provide safe, clean & environmentally responsible travel experiences for all passengers.
