To enhance passenger convenience, the Eastern Railway (ER) has commenced the operation of 12-coach EMU local trains from platforms 1, 2, and 5 at Sealdah Station. With this upgrade, Sealdah Station, one of India's busiest railway hubs, continues to modernise its services for the millions of passengers who commute daily.

Historically, due to shorter platform lengths, only nine-coach trains could operate from platforms 1 to 5 at Sealdah. Platforms 6 and 7 were already accommodating 12-coach trains, leading to passenger dissatisfaction due to the unequal service levels. ER authority has now addressed this by extending platforms 1, 2, and 5, enabling them to handle 12-coach trains. The extension of platforms 3 and 4 is also nearing completion and will soon support 12-coach operations as well.

ER operates approximately 892 local trains daily in the Sealdah Division.With the introduction of 12-coach trains, each train can now carry approximately 1,000 additional passengers compared to the nine-coach trains. This expansion will significantly alleviate congestion, particularly during peak hours, making travel more comfortable and efficient for passengers.

Passengers traveling to and from various destinations such as Barasat, Barrackpore, Shantipur, Naihati, Shyamnagar, Bongaon, Dankuni, Sodepur, and Khardah will benefit from this upgrade. The increased train length will facilitate easier boarding and deboarding, especially at key stations like Bidhannagar and Dum Dum, which previously experienced high passenger congestion.

This development is expected to enhance the overall travel experience, making it more convenient and pleasant.
