Press Information Bureau (PIB), Cochin, under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting organized a media workshop for regional media persons in Taliparamba of Kannur district today. The workshop was organized in association with the Central Bureau of Communication, Kannur Office, and Press Forum, Taliparamba at Hotel Horizon.
PIB, Kerala Lakshadweep Region Additional Director General Shri V. Palanichamy inaugurated the workshop. In his speech Shri V. Palanichamy said that the media should play an important role in promoting development journalism and development communication. He added that the media needs to give enough space to news related to social issues and development communication. He highlighted the need for skill development in all fields and pointed out the importance of scaling up the talent through it. In addition, Shri Palanichamy called upon journalists to acquire the skills to understand and expose 'fake' and 'deep fake' etc. in the context of information technology influencing all aspects of life.
Representing the District Administration, Kannur Assistant Collector, Ms.Ehteda Mufassir delivered the felicitation address. Ms.Ehteda Mufassir said that development can't take place until people are aware of the policies and schemes designed for them. She stressed that media should play a greater role in ensuring that such information reaches all the people especially those who are at the grassroot level. She further stated that media must report news which is empowering, sensitive and inclusive particularly highlighting stories of progress and transformation
As a part of the event, Padmashree awardee Shri E.P. Narayanan Peruvannan and veteran journalist from Taliparamba Shri V. B. Parameswaran were felicitated.

The primary session on ‘Central Government Schemes – Facilitating Development Through Banks,’ was led by Dr. Renjith K. S., Lead District Manager, Kannur. During the session, the speaker detailed about the various social security schemes including PMEGP, PM Mudra, PMJJBY, PMSBY etc. He also spoke about the the nationwide campaign by central Government which has been launched by Department of Financial Services for the saturation of Financial Inclusion (FI) schemes at the Gram Panchayat (GP) & Urban Local Body (ULB) level .
Sri C. P. Surendran, Retired News Editor, Kerala Kaumudi, Kannur, held a session on ‘Development Journalism: An Overview of Central Government Schemes Over the Past 11 Years,’ CP surendran spoke about the points to be taken care of while reporting various social security schemes citing various examples. He stressed the importance of giving adequate priority to development journalism
Shri Sabu T John, Chief Sub Editor, Malayalam Manorama, Kannur, made a presentation on ‘Fake News, Misinformation and Fact-Check: The Role of Social Media’. Shri.Sabu in his session detailed the difference between misinformation and disinformation. He emphasized the importance of applying observation skills as a journalist in busting fake news. He also mentioned about the several tools which can be used in identifying fake news.
Smt. Lekshmi Priya S. S., Assistant Director (M&C), PIB Cochin gave an introduction to various media Organizations under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

In the 'Sharing of Experiences' segment of the workshop, Shri.Biju Mather, Assistant Director, CBC Kannur; Shri K.O Sasidharan, PTC, AIR Kannur and Shri Sreeni Alakode, stringer, Doordarshan addressed the function representing various media units under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in Kannur District .Shri Nirmal Mayyazhi, representing Janavani FM, a community radio station in Kannur, also addressed the gathering.
As a part of the programme, a beneficiary of central government scheme Shri Jabbar P ( Prime Ministers Employment Generation Programme- PMEGP and PM Formalization of Micro Food Processing Enterprises (PMFME) shared his experiences about how his life changed for better after availing the loans under both schemes
. Shri M K Manoharan, President, Shri M V Rajesh, Secretary, Taliparamba Press Forum and Smt Shamila K. Y., Media and Communication Officer, PIB Cochin also addressed the gathering.
PIB periodically organizes such workshops in various districts to build a direct interface with regional media persons as part of its outreach activities.
