RAC Members Visit Progressive Farmer’s Integrated Farming Model; Stakeholder Consultation Focuses on Climate-Resilient Agriculture

ICAR–Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute organized a field visit and Stakeholder Consultation Meeting as part of the Third Meeting of the 10th Research Advisory Committee (RAC) on May 19, 2026, at Valpoi and Sanquelim in Goa, highlighting sustainable agriculture, integrated farming systems, climate resilience and farmer-centric innovations.

RAC Chairman Dr. S. D. Sawant along with RAC members Dr. S. Vennila, Dr. V. Sejian and Dr. Manoj P. Samuel visited the farm of progressive farmer Shri Vinod Barve at Valpoi in Sattari taluka, North Goa. The visit was accompanied by Dr. Parveen Kumar, Dr. Shirish D. Narnaware and scientists of the institute.

Shri Vinod Barve, recipient of the Jagjivan Ram Abhinav Kisan Puruskar and Millionaire Farmer Award 2024, has developed a successful integrated farming model through innovative cashew processing, value-added agricultural products and sustainable farming practices. The RAC members appreciated Shri Barve’s innovative approach towards making farming profitable and sustainable through diversification and value addition.

The experts suggested the development of floriculture and landscaping models, exploration of early and multi-flowering jackfruit varieties and provision of irrigation facilities in cashew plantations to further improve productivity and profitability. 

Later, ICAR-CCARI organized a Stakeholder Consultation Meeting at Sai Nursing Institute, Sanquelim, Goa Social worker and activist Sulakshana Sawant attended the programme as the Chief Guest.

Smt Sawant emphasized the need for coordinated efforts among institutions and departments for effective transfer of scientific technologies to farmers. She also highlighted the importance of balanced fertilizer use, adoption of natural farming practices, GI tagging and encouraging youth participation in agriculture and allied sectors towards achieving the vision of Viksit Goa and Viksit Bharat.

The RAC members also emphasized the need for developing climate-resilient varieties, improving farm mechanization, promoting value addition and strengthening post-harvest management to address the challenges of climate change and declining farm productivity in coastal regions.

Bringing together farmers, Self-Help Groups (SHGs), Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), scientists, officials from the Departments of Agriculture, Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services, representatives from NABARD, GCCI, Goa State Biodiversity Board, Goa Institute of Management and 80 stakeholders participated in the programme.
