IIT Jodhpur to Host International Conference on Water Sustainability, Bridging Traditional Wisdom and Scientific Innovation

ICWS 2026 to bring leading scientists, policymakers and community leaders together to address water security, climate change and sustainable water management

प्रविष्टि तिथि: 27 OCT 2026 3:29PM by PIB Jaipur

The Indian Institute of Technology Jodhpur (IIT Jodhpur) will host the International Conference on Water Sustainability: Innovations, Policy, and Community Resilience (ICWS 2026) during October 28–30, 2026. Organised by the Department of Environmental and Sustainability Engineering (DESE), the conference will bring together researchers, industry experts, government representatives and community stakeholders to explore practical and innovative solutions to growing water challenges.

With climate change, groundwater depletion, deteriorating water quality and rising demand putting increasing pressure on water resources, the conference will focus on connecting scientific research and technological innovations with effective policies and community participation.

Rajasthan’s traditional water-conservation practices will form an important part of the discussions. Systems such as baoris (stepwells), tankas (underground water-storage structures), johads (village ponds) and jheels (lakes) offer valuable lessons in water conservation, particularly in arid regions such as the Thar Desert. ICWS 2026 will explore how this traditional knowledge can be integrated with modern science, engineering and data-driven technologies.

The conference will cover five key themes: water quality and treatment; climate change and water security; water resource management and governance; nature-based solutions and traditional knowledge; and agriculture and water-use efficiency.

Invited speakers and guests include Padma Shri Prof. Ashutosh Sharma of IIT Kanpur and former Secretary, Department of Science and Technology, Government of India; Padma Shri Prof. Thalappil Pradeep of IIT Madras; Prof. Volker Abetz of the University of Hamburg, Germany; Shri Rajendra Singh, known as the Waterman of India; Shri Ramveer Tanwar, known as the Pondman of India; Shri S. Karunanithi of ONGC; and Dr. V. S. Jaitawat, Vice Chancellor, Agriculture University.

The conference will offer publication opportunities through ACS ES&T Water and Springer’s Lecture Notes in Civil Engineering, subject to editorial review and acceptance criteria. Ten awards, sponsored by ACS ES&T Water and ACS ES&T Engineering, will recognise excellence in research, scientific communication and innovative water solutions.

The conference is convened by Dr. Kirti Sankhala, Associate Head, DESE under the guidance of Prof. Avinash Kumar Agrawal, Director, IIT Jodhpur.

Aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6 on Clean Water and Sanitation, ICWS 2026 reflects IIT Jodhpur’s commitment to interdisciplinary research and sustainable development.
