Union Minister Thaawar Chand Gehlot lays foundation stone for New Hostel Building for Differently Abled Students

Union Minister for Social Justice & Empowerment Thaawar Chand Gehlot laid the foundation stone for a new accessible hostel building for the differently abled students of Ali Yavar Jung National Institute of Speech & Hearing Disabilities (D) Mumbai, today. The construction work of the building is expected to begin this month.

Speaking at the event, the Union Minister said that, “In a city like Mumbai, one faces many issues in finding an accommodation. When differently abled students from across the country come here to study, they struggle a lot in finding a place to stay. Even if they get admission, stay and commutation are of a great challenge for them. With this new hostel building, students will get comfortable rooms with attached bathrooms and also canteen facilities. This will help them stay and study peacefully.”

AYJNISHD (D), will construct an accessible hostel building at the institute premises for its students at Bandra West, Mumbai. The upcoming construction of hostel building for students is within the same complex of the institute. The new hostel building, at an estimated cost of Rs. 20 crores with eight floors, 70 rooms, attached toilets and canteen facility, is expected to be completed in a phased manner. The construction work has been awarded to M/s RKR Construction by CPWD, MCD-I Mumbai.

Chief Engineer, Central Public Works Department, Shri L Dung Dung, mentioned that the construction of four stories will be completed within a year during first phase and eight floors within 24 months.

The new construction is expected to provide, accessible environment for persons with disabilities and enable residential hostel facilities. This will alleviate the inconvenience and offer solutions to the challenges in existing arrangements. This initiative of AYJNISHD (D) is in consonance with the efforts of Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (Divyangjan), Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, to empower the student community in terms of human resources and alleviate residential facilities. The existing hostel accommodates around 150 boys and girls including Divyangjan students, since 1983 in the existing office premises.

AYJNISHD(D), Mumbai, is an autonomous body functioning under the administrative control of the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (Divyangjan), Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Govt. of India enabling the rehabilitation of individuals with speech and hearing disabilities across the country. It is a non-profit making organization fully financed & funded by the DEPWD, with Mumbai as a Headquarters. As a part of the clinical services, AYJNISHD (D) offers services like identification of hearing loss, fitment of hearing aids and therapeutic services. The Institute also conducts Diploma, Post Graduate Diploma Graduate & post Graduate and Doctoral training programs in Audiology/speech & hearing and Education.

MLA Ashish Shelar, Director AYJNISHD, Dr Suni M Mathew, Dr.Yogesh Dube were also present on the occasion.
