Since 2007, after the declaration in the UN General assembly,  April 2 is recognised internationally and celebrated as World Autism Awareness Day and the month of April as autism awareness month every year.

The National Institute for the Empowerment of the Persons with Multiple Disabilities (NIEPMD) at Muttukadu Chennai celebrated the month of April to spread awareness about persons with Autism with a series of events. Nachiketa Rout, Director NIEPMD informed that both online and offline events were conducted to spread awareness. Variety of  events  starting up from lighting the entire Campus with Blue Lights, the staff wore Blue dress along with a blue ribbon as the colour blue is associated with autism empowerment. Many events like signature campaign slogan writing and drawing competitions were organized. Videos and spots describing the condition & success stories were prepared. A huge Mural of an autism ribbon has been drawn on the entry gate wall of NIEPMD. NIEPMD has initiated online service delivery rehabilitation programmes including both therapeutic, curricular and co-curricular activities for persons with autism keeping in view the pandemic situation.
