JalJeevan Mission is a central government scheme which targets to provide all rural households with drinking water in taps at their homes by 2024.  It aims to give functional household tap connections to all rural households under the scheme. Under the Mission till now 4.68 crore rural households were given tap water supply all over the country. In Tamil Nadu, out of 1.26 crore rural houses 43.48 lakh household were given tap water supply under JJM scheme as per Ministry records.

Tiruchirapalli is blessed with Cauvery and Coleroon-Kollidam rivers and so the ground water level is high. Though many parts of the Trichy city gets drinking water from Cauvery, there are parts of the district which is away from potable water. JalJeevan Mission has come as a boon to thousands of families especially women as it ensures potable water in their households with tap water. Now in Tiruchirapalli district out of 3.84 lakh rural households more than 52 per cent 2 lakh rural households have been provided tap water at their homes under the scheme.

Smt Devayaani from Keezhapuram village in ThayanurPanchayat thanked government profusely for giving water tap connection under JalJeevan Mission scheme. She said that earlier they had to walk a distance to fetch drinking water. Under the scheme, in 2020-21 tap water connection was given and they are getting uninterrupted potable water. Under the Mission, 55 families in Thayanurpanchayat were given tap water connection. Dhanalakshmi a resident of the village says that earlier she used to walk more than half kilometre to fetch drinking water. It was very tedious and tiresome but now with JJM taps we are getting drinking water in our house itself.

Smt S Jagadambal of PeriyanayakiSathiramPanchayat says that JJM scheme has given drinking water through taps in their home. She thanked government for the scheme, as earlier it was very difficult to get drinking water and for cooking purpose. It was very hard walking miles in old age, she said. PeriyanayakiSathiramPanchayat President, Shri S Palraj said that under Jaljeevan Mission 70 water tap connections were given in this year. This has helped the families of these households as they don’t have to walk miles to fetch water. He said that there are 350 houses in the village and government is aiming to give tap connections to each household under JJM.

JalJeevan Mission has changed the lives of rural women. Earlier they had to walk miles to fetch drinking water and carry it in pots on their heads back home. But now under JJM, they are getting drinking water at their doorsteps, making their life easier. JJM is indeed a revolutionary scheme aimed at providing drinking water to each and every rural home by 2024.
