Huge quantities of toys not bearing BIS standard Mark (ISI mark) seized

Officials from Mumbai Branch Office of Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) conducted an enforcement search and seizure operation at Hamleys Store, Mumbai on 27 October 2021. The operation was carried out to check the violation of Quality Control Order on Toys. The store was found selling toys without BIS standard mark (ISI mark). Huge quantities of toys not bearing BIS standard Mark (ISI mark) were seized. The Hamleys store is situated in the departure hall of Terminal-2 of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, Mumbai. 

As per the Toys (Quality Control) Order, 2020 issued by Government of India, Toys shall bear the Standard Mark under a licence from the BIS. Further as per the section 16 and 17 of BIS Act, 2016, No person shall manufacture, import, distribute, sell, hire, lease, store or exhibit for sale toys without a Standard Mark, except under a valid licence. 

The misuse of BIS Standard Mark is punishable with imprisonment up to two years or a fine of minimum Rs. 2, 00,000, which may extend up to ten times the value of articles affixed or applied with a Standard Mark as per BIS Act 2016. Action is being initiated to file a case in the court of law for the aforementioned offence.

A number health and safety issues are involved with toys. Hence Government of India has made it mandatory that all the toys shall be sold in the market duly certified by BIS. Therefore, manufacturers, importers, and sellers shall desist forthwith, from selling toys without a license from BIS.
