CSIR-CMERI Durgapur is organising a Skill Development Programme for ‘Hands-On-Training on Robot Building’ during the period March 7 – 11, 2022. The inaugural session of this five-day Skill Development Programme was held today in presence of Prof. Harish Hirani, Director, CSIR-CMERI Durgapur. The Skill Development Programme is being participated by 18 students from across West Bengal from Jalpaiguri Engineering College, Camellia Engineering College, Sanaka College of Engineering among others. The ‘Hands-On-Training on Robot Building’ Skill Development Program is the ‘Stepping Stone’ towards steadily expanding the reach of the programme to a wider ambit of students across the Nation. The focus of the program is to acquaint the students with the Basics of Robotics and Robot Building and showcase how robotics can be made a readily available tool for remote and continuous online monitoring/ inspection and executing different operations so as to avoid the use of human personals for hazardous and monotonous/ repetitive works.

Prof. Harish Hirani, Director, CSIR-CMERI, in his inaugural address stated that CSIR-CMERI in the recent years has started believing that ‘Technologies in the Lab’ ought to be implemented and deployed to assess its efficacy and upgrade its performance parameters, if required. Robot Building is considered as a Hobby for technology enthusiasts, technocrats and technopreneurs alike. CSIR-CMERI has been a Powerhouse since a long time in the domain of Robot development. Robotic solutions for industrial problems such as Remote Leakage Detection, Failure Diagnosis and Analysis, Inspection in inaccessible Modules, Avoidance of Health Hazards etc. have been developed by CSIR-CMERI. In tune with the vision of the Prime Minister of India, we need to accelerate the incorporation of Robotics in our Manufacturing Processes, he said. This will aid in improving the efficiency, effectiveness and safety of the industrial workers across a diverse domain. As the business structures are becoming more and more fluid, the new-age students have to be extremely agile and develop the attributes of curiosity, innovation and inventiveness. There is a need to specialise as per the evolving demands of the market and embrace a ‘Performance Driven Career’, Prof Hirani added.

Prof. Hirani requested the attending students to indulge in the ‘Robust Ambience of Science & Innovation’ existent at CSIR-CMERI. He further opined strengthening the knowledge base of the students in terms of Robotics and Robot Building, to improve the indigenous Robot Manufacturing Capability which will create employment opportunities in novel domains and will also assist the creation of a robust Robotics powered Assembly Lines and Automated Manufacturing Infrastructure, he stated.
