As part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, a Naval Uprising Commemorative Event is being organised by the Western Naval Command in Mumbai on 23 March 2022.

The event will begin at 8:00 AM with a Prabhat Pheri, a short awareness walk on Marine Drive, commencing at the NCPA (National Centre for Performing Arts) end. Accompanied by the Navy Band playing patriotic tunes, the walk will comprise naval veterans, Sea Cadet Corps cadets and school children.

Wreaths will be laid subsequently at the Naval Uprising Memorial, Cooperage, by veterans, serving personnel and invited dignitaries, in a solemn naval ceremony. The contribution of the uprising of Navy ratings to the Independence movement will be discussed and reminisced thereafter through an event planned at the lawns of the Sailors Home, adjacent to the Memorial. Shri Aaditya Thackeray, Hon'ble Minister for Tourism and Environment, Government of Maharashtra, has kindly consented to be the Chief Guest at this event.

The Memorial will remain open to the public from 11:30 AM to 8:00 PM to pay floral tributes and lighting of candles (after sunset). The Navy Band will also perform for the public at the Memorial between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM. A second Navy Band contingent will simultaneously perform at Marine Drive, also between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM. This too is open to the general public. The Western Naval Command has invited all Mumbaikars to join in and be part of all segments of the commemorative event.
 

 

It may be recalled that the Naval Uprising started onboard HMIS Talwar in Mumbai on 18 February 1946 against the British government in India. From that initial flashpoint, it spread rapidly and found support throughout India, from Karachi to Kolkata, and ultimately came to involve over 20,000 sailors in 78 ships and shore establishments. It also received an upsurge of support from the civilian public all across, the people of Mumbai taking to the streets in thousands to strengthen it. The event shook the very foundation of the British government in India and has since been viewed as a key event of the freedom movement.

To commemorate the Uprising, the Memorial was erected at Cooperage in Colaba, Mumbai, by the Western Naval Command on 04 December 2001.
