Collaboration with private sector for supply of drinking water

प्रविष्टि तिथि: 18 JUL 2022 5:01PM by PIB Delhi

As per JJM guidelines, all States/ UTs have been advised to review and strengthen the existing network of drinking water quality testing laboratories in the State by setting up/ exploring Public-Private Partnership for additional labs at regional level, district level and block/ sub-division level in the State. A Technical Committee under the chairmanship of Principal Scientific Advisor (PSA) to Government of India has been set up to examine and recommend various innovations and water related technologies received from govt./ autonomous/ private entities, which can be used in providing potable tap water supply to every household.

As reported by Central Water Commission (CWC), Department of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation (DoWR, RD & GR), the list of major, medium irrigation & multipurpose projects which are currently under appraisal in CWC is Annexed.

Central Water Commission (CWC) compiles and maintains nation-wide register of large dams i.e. National Register of Large Dams (NRLD), as per information provided by dam owners. Details can be accessed through the link:

http://cwc.gov.in/sites/default/files/nrld06042019.pdf

As reported by National River Conservation Directorate (NRCD), DoWR, RD & GR, river cleaning is a continuous process. It is the responsibility of the States/UTs and local bodies to ensure required treatment of sewage and industrial effluents to the prescribed norms before discharging into water bodies or land to prevent and control of pollution therein. The D/oWR, RD & GR supplements the efforts of the States/UTs by providing financial/technical assistance for abatement of pollution in identified stretches of rivers/tributaries in the country through the Centrally Sponsored Scheme of National River Conservation Plan (NRCP) for rivers excluding Ganga and its tributaries.

Under NRCP, pollution abatement projects for conservation of Satluj and Beas rivers have been implemented in 14 towns of Punjab namely Banga, Bholath, Dasuya, Hoshiarpur, Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Ludhiana, Moga, Mukerian, Nawanshehar, Phagwara, Phillaur, Sultanpur Lodhi and Tanda at a total cost of Rs.717.32 crores. These projects included setting up 22 STPs of total capacity 648.20 million litres per day for treatment of municipal sewage along with other components such as low-cost sanitation, I&D, crematoria, afforestation, public participation, etc.

Also, pollution abatement works for river Ghaggar in Punjab were sanctioned for 4 towns namely Khanauri, Moonak, Patran and Lehragaga at a total cost of Rs.57.10 crores for setting up of 4 STPs of 15 MLD capacity for treatment of municipal sewage.

This information was given by the Minister of State, Shri Prahlad Singh Patel in a written reply in Rajya Sabha today.
