Various physical and mental health issues are arising over time after the Covid-19 pandemic. All these issues were discussed in a brainstorming session, held on ‘Long Term Effects of the Covid-19 Infection’ on the second day of Indian Science Congress at the Rashtrasant Tukdoji Maharaj University. The session was presided over by Mr.  Rakesh Agrawal. Dr. Devendra Agrawal presented a research paper on ‘ Review of Post Covid Medical Complications’. Similarly Dr. Tanvi Singhal presented a paper on ‘ Secondary Infections after Covid'.  Dr. Vidyalaxmi Selvaraj presented a paper on ‘ Post Covid Mental Health’ and Dr. Vinit Agrawal presented his research paper on ‘ Complications in Post Covid Cardiac Surgery’.

While presenting his paper, Dr. Devendra Agrawal said, that a Covid infection or its treatment which prolongs for more than 12 weeks is the main reason behind the post Covid complications. 62 types of complications like cell damage, loss of taste and smell, swelling in cells and diabetes related complications have been seen in such type of patients. Apart from this an increase in symptoms like hair loss, frequent fatigue, change in voice and anxiety and depression is also seen in patients.

Dr. Tanu Singhal gave an insightful presentation about  secondary infection in her research paper. The doctor said that prolonged treatment in ICU for the Covid infection, dependency on artificial respiration lik ventilator support, use of infected oxygen and unhygienic conditions are the main causes of these secondary infections. It includes black fungus, pneumonia, urine infection and infection in the circulatory system. During the treatment it is observed that even though the patient is suffering from Covid, these secondary infections develop in due course and the patient becomes critical.

Dr. Vijaylaxmi Selvaraj in her research paper said that many changes have occurred in the social environment due to Covid with unprecedented situations such as  the lockdown, deaths of near relatives, illness and helplessness in taking care of  family members due to the fear of getting infected. As a result, people had to face mental health issues due to loneliness and  anxiety and also suffered psychiatric illnesses. Some of them even succumbed to addictions. There was also a rise in domestic violence incidences. Even after recovery people are still facing problems like depression, stress, anxiety, insomnia, sexual problems etc.

Dr. Vinit Agrawal presented his research paper on ‘ Complications in Post Covid Cardiac Surgery’. He studied more than 1,53,000 patients for his research. In his study it was found that patients were facing problems of irregular cardiac functions after prolonged Covid-19 treatment. The paper pointed towards the severeness of these irregular functions which can result in a cardiac arrest. Dr. Devendra Agrawal made the presentation on behalf of Dr. Vinit Agrawal.
