Nehru Science Centre, Mumbai Commemorates National Science Day 2023 with Week-long Celebration

Mumbai 1st March 2023

Nehru Science Centre, Mumbai, in collaboration with Rajiv Gandhi Science and Technology Commission (RGSTC), Govt. of Maharashtra and National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC), DST, Govt. of India, celebrated National Science Day 2023 with a week-long celebration from February 24 to March 1. The theme for this year's celebration was "Global Science for Global Wellbeing".

The celebration comprised various activities, lectures, contests, and workshops aimed at motivating young budding scientists to choose science as a career and encouraging the general public to adopt a scientific temper in their daily lives. Among the highlights of the celebration was the New Science Demonstration on the topic "Matter at Low Pressure," which included several demonstrations based on vacuum and low pressure. The famous Galileo Experiment on the Effect of Gravity on freely falling objects was also among the live demonstrations featured. 

The celebration also included a Virtual Labs (Online Labs) demonstration by Dr. M. Sasikumar, Executive Director, C-DAC, Mumbai, and his team members, which proved to be a valuable resource tool for students of 9th Std. & 12 Std., who wish to explore science in an interactive manner.

Other attractions during the Science Day celebration included a Slogan Writing Contest, Written Science Quiz, Street Play Contest, Painting Contest, Regular Science Shows (Live Experimental Demonstration), Sky Observation, Giant Bubble Show, Astro-Voyage event, and a Make and Take programme where visitors could make their own science-based toys and take them home as souvenirs. The Sir C. V. Raman Memorial Lecture, delivered by Prof. B. N. Jagatap, Professor, Dept. of Physics, IIT, Bombay, concluded the celebration.

In his lecture, Prof. Jagatap explained the Raman Effect and apprised students about grave problems that confront the world such as global warming and climate change. He emphasized the need for sustainable development and team-work to find solutions for basic needs like hunger, poverty, food, and energy. Prof. Jagatap also highlighted the need for each one of us to find solutions to the problems that pose the greatest threats to life on Earth, such as climate change, global warming and rising Carbon Dioxide levels in the atmosphere

The week-long celebration witnessed enthusiastic participation from visitors, making the program a huge success. The celebrations concluded with prize distribution at the hands of Prof. Jagatap to the winners of the various contests held during the week.
