In a swift and coordinated action, Officers of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) Ahmedabad nabbed a key accused in a gold smuggling case, who had escaped after having been arrested by DRI. DRI had launched a nationwide hunt after the accused fled in the wee hours of Thursday from the DRI's Mumbai Office.

The accused who had played a key role in gold smuggling case was intercepted at Mumbai airport on Wednesday and arrested by DRI and was to be brought to Ahmedabad on transit remand granted by the Court. However, while in DRI Custody, he managed to flee from the DRI Office. A nationwide operation was launched to catch hold of the absconding accused person. Coordinated efforts were made to track his movement. A round-the-clock vigil was kept at his known addresses and on the movement of his close associates. Today, based on inputs gathered that the accused has reached Ahmedabad, officers of DRI nabbed him and produced in the court.

The arrested person is one of the key persons in a gold syndicate busted at Ahmedabad airport in the month of June 2023, wherein a passenger coming from Dubai was arrested when he attempted to smuggle about 3 kgs of gold. He was on the run for the past several months. The arrest of this absconding key person of syndicate involved in gold smuggling, marks a significant success for the DRI and its efforts to combat gold smuggling.

Further investigation is under progress.
