Two- Day Regional Workshop (Hybrid Mode) on Documentation of Antiquities & BHS in NMMA Format

A two-day Regional Workshop (Hybrid mode) on Documentation of Antiquities & BHS in NMMA format of The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) was inaugurated on December 18, 2023 at Salt Lake, Sector-1, Kolkata to foster collaboration and knowledge sharing among experts and scholars in the field of documentation of antiquities in the NMMA format, besides, training all academicians in professional manner to develop a common format of inventories of antiquities and archaeological objects across the country.

Dr. Gautam Sengupta, former Director General, Archaeological Survey of India was the Chief Guest at the inaugural function. Professor Kishore Kumar Basa, Director General, Archaeological Survey of India & Chairman, National Monuments Authority, New Delhi; Shri Biplab Roy, Administrator General and Official Trustee, Govt. of West Bengal, Dr. Madhulika Samanta, Director, NMMA, Archaeological Survey of India; Dr. Dillip Kumar Khamari, Regional Director (Eastern Region), Kolkata shared their ideas with the scholars and academicians there. Dr. Rajendra Yadav, Superintending Archaeologist, Kolkata Circle extended the vote of thanks to the dignitaries.
The inaugural session was followed by presentation by Dr. Madhulika Samanta, Director, NMMA on “National Databases on Monuments and Antiquities: From the Perspective of Archaeological Database Management”, in which she spoke about NMMA, its objectives, targets and achievements. Prof. Sheila Mishra, Retired Professor & Head, Deccan College, Pune, gave a presentation on “Documentation of Archaeological Sites and their Geological Contexts”. Prof. Shanti Pappu, Founder/Secretary, Sharma Centre for Heritage Education, Chennai talked about “Documentation of Stone Artefacts as per NMMA”. Dr. Rajendra Yadav, Superintending Archaeologist, ASI, Kolkata presented the documentation process of Built Heritage and Temples of Eastern India. The participants were imparted practical training on documentation in NMMA format.

The workshop was attended by the archaeologists posted in the Circle offices, Excavation Branches and Museums of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) in the States of West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand and Odisha in Eastern India. Besides, representatives from local heritage organizations, Universities, State Archaeology & Museums, students and research scholars also participated in the workshop. Since the workshop was in hybrid mode, 44 participants attended the first day of the workshop online.
