The Mumbai Research Centre of the ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (ICAR-CIFT) held a significant stakeholder meeting on January 19, 2024, focusing on the future of fishing technology and fish processing. The meeting, which took place at the Centre's Conference Hall in Vashi, Navi Mumbai, saw participation from 21 key stakeholders in the field of fisheries. Dr. Shravan K Sharma, Scientist presented the welcome address. 

The meeting's agenda, spearheaded by Dr. Asha K.K., Principal Scientist and Scientist In-Charge at MRC ICAR-CIFT, centered on aligning research efforts with the current challenges and opportunities in the fishing and fish processing sectors. Stakeholders were divided into groups to discuss topics in Fishing Technology, Fish Processing, Fish quality and Socio-economic aspects, fostering a collaborative environment for sharing insights and experiences.

Significant points raised during the meeting include the development of improved fishing gears for deep reservoirs, exploration of barriers to prevent fish migration, and innovations in fishing boat design. The stakeholders also discussed the importance of pre-processing equipment for extending shelf life on fishing vessels, validation of PFZ (Potential Fishing Zone) data, and the pressing issue of bycatch load in trawls and dolnets.

In the fish processing segment, discussions focused on comparing the quality of fish based on various killing methods, employing sterilized seawater for preprocessing, and designing effective training courses for fish processing plant workers. Additionally, stakeholders emphasized the need for technology development in byproduct processing from jellyfish bycatch and modifications in the Freshness Kit developed by ICAR-CIFT.

Socio-economic discussions included creating awareness about fishing technologies, increasing fish consumption in Maharashtra, addressing the shortage of skilled manpower in the fish processing industry, and developing technology substitutes for potable water in seafood industries.

Dr. Asha K.K. concluded the meeting with a commitment to taking immediate action on the issues raised and maintaining open communication with stakeholders. The meeting highlighted the collective efforts and dedication of the fishing community and research institutions towards sustainable and efficient fishing practices in Maharashtra and beyond.
