National Seminar on Soil Ecosystem Services for Sustainable Agriculture

Indian Soil Survey and Land Use Planning Society (ISSLUP) is organizing a National Seminar on “Soil Ecosystem Services for Sustainable Agriculture” from 21-23 February 2024 at Dr. S.P. Raychaudhuri Auditorium, ICAR-NBSS&LUP, Amravati Road, Nagpur. Hon’ble Sh H.C. Girish, IFoS Commissioner, Watershed Development Department, Karnataka will be the Chief Guest. Hon’ble Dr M. Madhu, Director, ICAR-IISWC, Dehradun will be thye Guest of Honor. The President of the ISSLUP Society is the Dr. Bramha Swaroop Dwivedi, Member, ASRB, New Delhi. Dr N.G. Patil, Director, ICAR-NBSS&LUP, Nagpur is the Convener of the National Seminar. The Organizing Secretary of the National Seminar is Dr K. Kartikeyan, Pr. Scientist of the Bureau. About 200 and more delegates from different parts of the India namely, scientists, students, policy planners, industrialists etc. are expected to attend this National Seminar.

Soil security and soil sustainability form the foundation for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of UN 2030, and are essential for supporting agricultural intensification in our country. Increased and uneven resource utilization has adverse impact on natural resources, mainly soils. The long-term sustainability of food, fuel, and fiber production necessitates concurrent enhancements in soil functions through sustainable management practices. Scientists can significantly intervene and contribute to the global sustainability of agricultural lands by translating scientific knowledge about soil functions into practical methods. These methods enrich growers' understanding and enable them to assess the sustainability of their management practices. Soil plays a crucial role in providing various ecosystem services (ESS) that are fundamental to life and support human activities. These ecosystem services encompass global climate regulation, water purification, human health protection, and biodiversity conservation. Soil ESS depends on environmental characteristics that determine soil properties and the types of services it offers. However, the value of these services can either increase or decrease significantly based on our land management practices. Incorrect land uses, such as wildfires, excess tillage, and urban sprawl, can significantly diminish the value of ESS provided by soil. In this context, there is an urgent need to assess soil ecosystem services and secure soil functioning through sustainable land use. The other sub-themes are mainly, Land resource inventorization and its advancement in assessing the soil ecosystem services (SESS); Soil Ecosystem Services for sustainable Agriculture to ensure food and nutritional security, and Soil Ecosystem Services (ESS), conservation and management.
