Capacity Building Programme of NML started at BDU

45th Capacity Building Program of National Mission on Libraries (NML) for Public Library Personnel under the Ministry of Culture (MoC), Government of India (GoI) has been started in the Bharathidasan University (BDU) in collaboration with Department of Library and Information Science (DLIS) of the university from 19th July, 2024. Among the dignitaries, Dr. V Rajesh Kannan, HoD, Dept. of Microbiology, BDU, Dr. C. Ranganathan, DLIS, BDU, Shri Dipanjan Chatterjee, Project Officer, NML, Dr. R. Mangaleswaran, HoD, Dept. of Social Work, BDU, Dr. R Balasubramani, Professor, DLIS, BDU and co-ordinator of the programme, Mr. M. Sivakumar, District Library Officer, Govt. of Tamilnadu, Dr. Y. Rama Mohan Rao, Editor, International Journal of Technical Education and Dr. M. Surulinathi, Syndicate Member, BDU have been present. The programme will continue till 23rd July, 2024.
Capacity Building Training Program is one of the major components of NML, which was launched in 2014 by the former President Shri Pranab Mukherjee on recommendation of the National Knowledge Commission. About 60 participants, who are mainly public library professionals from Karnataka, Kerala, Tamilnadu, Telengana and Andhra Pradesh are attending this training.
Shri Dipanjan Chatterjee said, "NML has been established in 2014 with its 04 components i.e. Establishment of Model Libraries, Qualitative and Quantitative Survey of Public Libraries, Capacity Building Training Program and Creation of National Virtual Library of India. The first three components have been looked after by RRRLF, which is an Autonomous Organisation under the union Ministry of Culture." RRRLF was established in 1972 and has been working for upliftment and betterment of Public Libraries throughout the country." He added, "Besides the assistance from RRRLF, two (02) model libraries run by Govt. of Tamilnadu i.e. District Library Tiruchirapalli and Vellore were upgraded as “Model Library” and NML has already provided assistance of Rs.68 lakhs and Rs.79 lakhs respectively. In addition to this Thanjavur Maharaja Serfoji's Saraswathi Mahal Library was given Rs. 667.48 lakhs in respect of upgrading the services as a Model Library of NML.”
Mr. M. Sivakumar emphasized that we must go to library to inculcate reading habits and libraries are being upgraded with modern tools and techniques. He also added that NML and RRRLF has been serving the Nation to develop a quality library infrastructure.
Dr. R Balasubramani, co-ordinator of the programme said, "In this training program, 65 library professionals are being trained in respect of providing quality library services to the society with updated ICT skills, library automation software, library management, preservation and conservation of documents etc. in the next 5 days."
