Chennai City Postal Region covers 74,332 girl children under Selvamagal Semippu Thittam during the financial year 2024-25

Selvamagal Semippu Thittam savings scheme was introduced by the Government of India in the year 2015 for the welfare of girl children. In the last financial year 2024-25, Chennai City Region has opened 74,332 Sukanya Samriddhi Accounts (SSA).

Since inception of the scheme, Chennai City Region has opened more than 10.44 lakh SSA accounts with total deposit of 9234 Crore till 31.03.2025. Chennai City Postal Region includes Chennai City Divisions, Arakkonam, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai and Pondicherry.  In the year 2024-25, the amount of money deposited is Rs.1,798 crores. This is higher than the previous year deposit of Rs.1,564 crores. The deposits have grown by 14.96% compared to the previous year.

Sukanya Samriddhi Account offers highest interest rate of 8.2% per annum and Income Tax exemption for deposits under Sec 80C of Income Tax Act. An account under the scheme can be opened for girl children below 10 years of age by parent or legal guardian with minimum of Rs.250/- and maximum of Rs.1.5 lakhs per financial year. The account allows 50% of withdrawal at the age of 18 years or after passing 10th standard for higher education purposes. The account reaches maturity after 21 years from the date of opening of the account. Also, the account can be closed at the time of marriage or after attaining the age of 18 years (1 month before the date of marriage or within 3 months after the date of marriage).
