Udupi Cochin Shipyard Limited delivered the first in series of six 3800 T DW dry cargo vessels to M/s Wilson Ship Management AS, Norway

Udupi Cochin Shipyard Limited (Udupi-CSL), Karnataka, a wholly owned subsidiary of Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), today delivered the first in series of six 3800 T DW dry cargo vessels to M/s. Wilson Ship Management AS, Norway, the largest short sea shipping company in Europe. The event marking the occasion was held at the New Mangalore Port.

2. Dr. Sushma Akkaraju, W/O Dr. Venkata Ramana Akkaraju, Chairman New Mangalore Port Authority, christened the new vessel, to mark the formal delivery of the vessel, in presence of the Chairman and senior officers of New Mangalore Port Authority. Senior officials of M/s Wilson Ship Management AS, Norway Mr. Einar Torsnes, Chief Financial Officer, Mr. Sergey Bogdashov, New Build Superintendent and the Wilson site team graced the occasion. Shri. Harikumar A, CEO, Udupi-CSL and members of the Udupi-CSL team were present along with, Shri. Sivaram N Swamy, General Manager (Business Development), CSL and Mr. Eric Veith, Bureau Veritas.

3. M/s. Wilson Ship Management AS, a company headquartered in Bergen, Norway and having branch offices strategically located in Europe is the largest short sea fleet in Europe. Every year they transport about 15 million tonnes dry cargo across Europe. Approximately 10,000 port calls a year. A well-developed logistics system built around a strategically balanced portfolio of contracts and spot cargoes, combined with a homogenous fleet, enabling skilled workforce to meet the customer demand. M/s. Wilson Ship Management AS, has a fleet of around 130 vessels ranging from 1500 to 8500 DWT, all of similar design with a core objective to carry any cargo at any time.  Subsequent to start of production of the 3800 series vessels, M/s. Wilson Ship Management AS, has signed a further order for construction of Eight 6300 TDW General Cargo Vessels with Udupi-CSL at a total cost of INR 1041 Crores.

4. Udupi-CSL, formerly known as TEBMA SHIPYARDS Limited, was taken over by CSL in 2020 through an order of the Hon. NCLT (National Company Law Tribunal) Chennai, and started operations in 2021. In the last three years, the shipyard has constructed and delivered Eight Aluminium Hulls for Cochin Shipyard Limited for the Kochi Water Metro Project, Eight Tuna Long liner Cum Gillnetters under the PMMSY scheme (Pradhan Manthri Mathsya Sampada Yojana), Two 62 T Bollard Pull ASTDS Tugs to Ocean Sparkle Limited, an Adani Harbour services Company and Two 70 T Bollard Pull ASTDS Tugs to Polestar Maritime Limited complying with the Atma Nirbhar Bharat initiative of Government of India.  The shipyard has also signed orders for construction of another Eleven 70 T Bollard pull tugs with Ocean Sparkle Limited and one 70 T Bollard Pull Tug with Polestar Maritime Limited.  The contracts signed with Ocean Sparkle Limited for construction of eleven 70 T tugs is the largest series tug construction order ever signed by an Indian Shipyard.

5. Wilson Eco 1, the vessel Christened today, is a 3800 Deadweight Dry Cargo Vessel.  This is an ambitious project under the Norwegian Government green funding programme aimed at emission-free transport solutions. The total project cost is about INR 506 Crore. This “Future proof General Cargo Vessel” is designed by M/s. Conoship International, a leading Ship design house of the Netherlands. The ship is constructed as an Environmentally friendly Diesel Electric vessel.  The vessel is also ready for upgradation by installation of Wind foil units and battery hybrid systems.  These vessels are intended for transport of general cargo through Inland as well as coastal waters of Europe.  The vessel, with Length overall (LOA) 89.43 m Beam of 13.2 m and Draft of 4.3 m is propelled by 750kW propulsion motors. It has a deadweight of 3800 Metric Tonnes corresponding to a moulded draft in saltwater of 4.30 Metres. The vessel is classed by Bureau Veritas and built under Norwegian Flag. The vessel is powered by -E-Propulsion system designed, manufactured and supplied by D&A Electric, Netherlands. The Propulsion Package is supplied by Berg Propulsion Sweden.  The ship is equipped with Becker Rudder system for steering, Scania Deisel generators, Bow thrusters from Veth Propulsion Emergency generator from Sizu Diesel. The ship is also fitted with Gantry Cranes designed and supplied by Coops & Neiborg BV, and hatch covers manufactured by Udupi-CSL confirming to Coops & Deiborg BV designs. 

6. The vessel is designed as an all weather ship for unrestricted operation, with unmanned machinery space certification. It is also equipped with all navigation and communication equipment as per the latest class and flag requirements.

7. This “Make in India Make for the World” initiative of UCSL is aligned with the initiatives of the Government of India. The entire steel used in the construction of the vessel including the piping systems is manufactured in India. The power distribution system, Power management system, and the Vessel management system are designed and supplied by Marine Electricals Limited, India and the HVAC system has been designed and installed by SAF Refrigeration, Mumbai. Ship’s accommodation has been designed by M/s Maritime Montering Group, Norway, and installed by Maritime Montering Norinco (India) Pvt. Ltd., the Indian arm of Maritime Montering.   All thermal, fire and acoustic installation, furniture fitted onboard, and all the piping systems for the crew accommodation have been sourced by Maritime Monetring from India.

8. The ship has a complement of nine persons including six officers and three ratings.
