DRI scores hat-trick by busting huge drug haul at Ahmedabad airport

Continuous action against drugs in two weeks, third big haul seized

Posted On: 02 MAY 2025 7:03PM by PIB Ahmedabad

In a continued crackdown on international drug trafficking networks, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), in a joint operation with Ahmedabad Customs, seized 39.24 kilograms of hydroponic cannabis (commonly known as hydroponic weed) at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The contraband, with an estimated street value of 39 crore, was recovered from three Indian nationals who arrived from Bangkok.

The seizure comes just four days after DRI’s previous operation on April 29th and marks the third major interception at the airport in the last two weeks. Based on precise intelligence inputs, officers closely monitored the suspects upon arrival. A thorough inspection of their six trolley bags revealed 60 packets of a suspicious green, lumpy substance ingeniously concealed within branded food products such as Kellogg’s cereals, Cheezles, and other snacks, camouflaged beneath layers of clothing.

Subsequent chemical analysis confirmed the substance to be hydroponic cannabis — Unlike traditional marijuana grown in soil, hydroponic weed is cultivated using nutrient-rich water in controlled environments. This method accelerates growth and boosts potency, often resulting in higher levels of THC—the main psychoactive compound. As a result, hydroponic cannabis is more addictive and harmful. Its enhanced strength poses a greater threat to public health, especially among the youth.

This latest bust follows the seizure of 37.2 kilograms of hydroponic cannabis on April 29th and 17.5 kilograms on April 20th, both from Indian nationals arriving from Bangkok. With this third interception, the total quantity of narcotics seized at Ahmedabad Airport in this short span now stands at approximately 95 kilograms.

The drugs were seized under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. All three accused have been arrested and further investigations are currently underway to uncover the wider network involved.

This operation reaffirms the DRI’s resolute commitment to combating organized economic and narcotic crimes. It also reflects the agency’s unwavering efforts to shield the nation’s youth and society from the scourge of drug abuse, while upholding national security and sovereignty.
