ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CIFRI), Barrackpore, continues its dedicated efforts towards the conservation and restoration of the Ganga River under the Namami Gange Programme. The primary objective of the National River Ranching Programme is to replenish depleted fish stocks and restore aquatic biodiversity in the river.
Today, ICAR-CIFRI and Ramakrishna Math-Mission, Belur jointly conducted a river ranching programme at Belur Ghat. The event witnessed the release of 2.16 lakh advanced fingerlings of Indian Major Carps (IMCs)—Rohu (Labeo rohita), Catla (Labeo catla), Mrigal (Cirrhinus mrigala) into the river.
The programme was graced by the holy presence of Swami Suviranandaji Maharaj, General Secretary of Belur Math, along with Swami Shivapurnanandaji Maharaj, Vice Chairman of RKMVERI who emphasised the importance of river cleanliness and sustainable fishing practices. On this auspicious occasion Secretary Maharaj expressed solidarity to the retaliation by India against Pakistani barbaric atrocities and urged all countrymen to remain united and be with the Government.
Dr. B.K. Das, Director of the Institute stated "The continuous decline in the health of the river Ganga is a serious concern. Sustainable development goals must be achieved to improve fish stocks, which will ultimately enhance fisheries production in the future."
Additionally, 63 local fishers participated in the event, engaging in discussions with CIFRI representatives about biodiversity conservation, sustainable fishing techniques and river health. Moreover, the programme highlights the harmonization of environmental sustainability with heritage and tradition of India especially at Belur Math - a site of cultural and spiritual significance.
The National River Ranching Programme III at Belur Math underscores the need for integrated conservation efforts to revitalize the Ganga River. Leveraging a combination of scientific achievements coupled with traditional values, initiatives like these foster environmental sustainability while strengthening community ties with the river.
ICAR-CIFRI remains committed to its mission of restoring the ecological health of the Ganga River, ensuring that future generations continue to benefit from its rich biodiversity.
