Indian Railways is known as the lifeline of the country. Railway stations play a crucial role in rail operations and also serve as the identity of their respective cities. Most railway stations are at the heart of the city, around which the city’s economic, social, and cultural activities revolve. Therefore, it is necessary to develop these stations in such a way that they not only function as transit points but also become symbols of the city’s identity. When beautiful and grand stations are developed based on the cultural, spiritual, and religious heritage of the city, they leave a lasting impression on both domestic and international tourists arriving by train.
India's global credibility has increased under the able leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. While laying the foundation stone for the redevelopment of various railway stations, the Prime Minister stated, “India, which is moving towards the goal of development, is at the beginning of its Amrit Kaal. There is new energy, new inspiration, new resolutions.” Inspired by the Hon’ble PM, Indian Railways initiated the rejuvenation of more than 1,300 railway stations. Now, in less than two years, 103 redeveloped railway stations are set to be inaugurated under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS). This pace of redevelopment is unprecedented. The Prime Minister has often said that the projects for which he lays the foundation stone are also inaugurated by him. This reflects the new culture of a developing India, where the speed of project completion has significantly increased. Indian Railways deserves appreciation for the remarkable pace at which this work has been accomplished.
Of the more than 1,300 stations being developed under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, the 103 completed stations feature grand entrance gates, attractive facades, high-mast lighting, modern waiting rooms, ticket counters, upgraded toilets, and accessible ramps for Divyangjan. Additionally, shelters, coach indication systems, and digital displays have been installed on the platforms. All facilities are Divyangjan-friendly. At the same time, a glimpse of Gujarat’s folk art, culture, and traditions can also be seen at every station.
Okha Railway Station: A Gateway to the Coast and Devotion
Situated at the western tip of Gujarat, Okha Railway Station has long stood as a vital terminus connecting the coastal town to major destinations across India. Okha has been classified as an NSG-4 station under Western Railway. Serving the port of Okha and acting as a key transit point for pilgrims journeying to Bet Dwarka. The city has a strategic role in both tourism and industry and this station facilitates travel to iconic cities such as Mumbai, Puri, Rameswaram, Guwahati, Dehradun, and Varanasi.

In keeping with its importance, Okha Railway Station has recently undergone a comprehensive transformation under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. The redevelopment work has been executed at a cost of Rs. 7.12 crore, focussing on creating a world-class, passenger friendly station that upholds both functionality and aesthetics.
The station’s façade has been aesthetically reimagined, giving Okha a refreshed identity that resonates with its coastal charm and religious prominence. The improved frontage not only enhances visual appeal but also boosts the station’s visibility and stature. Platform No. 1 has seen complete surfacing enhancement, ensuring safe and smooth movement for all, including elderly passengers and those carrying luggage. The ease of boarding and deboarding has significantly improved, reflecting the Scheme’s emphasis on efficiency and accessibility. Newly installed signage across the station improves navigability, passenger safety, and operational clarity. By simplifying wayfinding and communication, the signage supports a smoother and more intuitive travel experience. The circulating and parking areas have been comprehensively redesigned. Structured parking, dedicated lanes for vehicle movement, and pedestrian-friendly pathways now ensure that passenger flow around the station remains smooth, safe, and organized.

Coversheds have been constructed on Platform Nos. 1 & 2/3, providing essential shelter, helping passengers stay protected from the weather elements. It has provided a more pleasant and organized waiting environment, as well as crowd management. These additions have made waiting areas more comfortable and visually cohesive. Modern, spacious toilet blocks have been constructed to maintain high standards of hygiene, featuring dedicated provisions for Divyangjan passengers. These facilities mark a step forward in elevating passenger comfort and convenience.
In terms of inclusivity, the station now incorporates Divyangjan-friendly infrastructure, including accessible signages, dedicated toilet facilities, and separate parking areas. This ensures that all travellers, regardless of physical ability, can navigate the premises with dignity and ease.
Through these impactful upgrades, Okha Railway Station has emerged as a shining example of the Amrit Bharat vision, blending spiritual significance, industrial relevance, and infrastructural excellence into a seamlessly modern passenger experience.

The wheels of the train symbolize the wheels of the country’s development. Railway stations are key centres driving the nation’s progress. Every Indian has a role to play in the advancement of Indian Railways and its stations. This participation must be further strengthened. It is also our collective responsibility to protect and maintain these stations with cleanliness and care.
