BIS Madurai branch organized Manak Manthan programme on Draft Indian Standard - Reinforcing Bars for Structural Concrete Part 1: Ribbed Steel Bars

Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Madurai branch conducted Manak Manthan – Discussion on Indian Standards, on Draft Indian Standard - Reinforcing Bars for Structural Concrete Part 1: Ribbed Steel Bars at Amman Try Steels (P) Ltd in Trichy on 27 May 2025. 56 participants representing Steel bars Manufacturing Industries, The Tiruchirapalli District Chamber of Commerce, CII Trichy Chapter, National Test House, Chennai, BIS Standard Club students of Government College of Engineering, Trichy and University College of Engineering (Anna University) Tiruchirappalli, participated in the Discussion in both physical and virtual mode.

The Indian Standard Specification for cold-twisted steel bars for concrete reinforcement was first published in 1961 and subsequently revised in 1966, 1979, 1986 and 2008. The current revision has been taken up to incorporate various changes found necessary from the experience gained and technological advances made in the field of steel reinforcement for concrete applications; and hence, to improve the mechanical and durability properties of reinforced concrete systems. Indian standards guide manufacturers in producing high-quality steel bars, forming the foundation for strong and durable structures.

Shri S D Dayanand, Senior Director & Head, BIS Madurai branch delivered the welcome address and outlined the program objectives. An indepth presentation on the salient features of Draft Indian Standard - Reinforcing Bars for Structural Concrete Part 1: Ribbed Steel Bars was presented by Shri Nishikant Singh, Joint Director and Member Secretary, Civil Engineering Department (CED), BIS, New Delhi. Smt Hemalatha P Panicker, Joint Director, BIS, Madurai presented on the Recent developments and features of the BIS Website including STANDARDS WATCH editions, Lesson Plans, how to join as a BIS Technical Committee member, BIS CARE app, etc.

Several comments on the draft Indian Standard were received from National Test House, Chennai and industries during the open house discussion which were clarified by BIS officials. Shri Nishikant Singh requested all the participants to provide comments on Draft Indian Standard with adequate justification through BIS CARE App or BIS website or through mail to CED and BIS Madurai office before 15th June 2025 so that the comments can be taken up for discussion in the next Technical Committee meeting. The meeting ended with a Vote of thanks by Shri A Arivazhagan, Joint Director, BIS, Madurai.
