Regional Meteorological Centre Guwahati Marks World Environment Day 2025 with Green Initiatives

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Guwahati, celebrated World Environment Day 2025 with the theme “Putting an End to Plastic Pollution”. The programme began with a sapling plantation drive, where the officials planted native trees to promote greenery and environmental awareness. A cleanliness drive followed, focusing on removing plastic waste from the Centre's premises and surrounding areas.
Sri K.N. Mohan, Scientist and The Head of the Centre addressed the gathering, urging everyone to reduce plastic usage in their daily lives. Dr. Sanjay O’Neill Shaw, Scientist encouraged everyone to reconnect with nature, stating- “Let’s renew our promise to protect Earth and free it from plastic pollution.” Shri Sunit Das, Scientist highlighted the importance of tree planting as a powerful step in fighting climate change and pollution.
A special lecture was delivered by Fr. (Dr.) John Joseph, Principal, St. Claret School, Borjhar, Guwahati on ‘Ending Plastic Pollution Globally.’ He emphasized how plastic misuse is damaging ecosystems and harming life worldwide. He advocated the 4R—Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Refuse as key principles to adopt. Fr. John also highlighted successful initiatives like using waste plastic in road construction, Mission LiFE, the Tide Turner Plastic Challenge, Go Green with Tetra Pak, and installing trash barriers in water bodies.
The event concluded with a pledge by participants to adopt eco-friendly habits. RMC Guwahati’s observance of World Environment Day reinforced the urgent need to combat plastic pollution and protect the environment.
