In a landmark achievement for agricultural innovation, the Governor of Manipur, Shri Ajay Kumar Bhalla, today launched RC Manichakhao-1, the first High-Yielding Variety (HYV) of Black Rice (Chakhao), developed by the ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Manipur Centre. This breakthrough marks a significant step toward enhancing agricultural productivity and supporting the livelihoods of Manipur’s farmers.

During a brief ceremony, Dr. Konsam Sarika, Scientist (Genetics and Plant Breeding) at ICAR Manipur Centre, alongside other officials, briefed the Governor on the science behind RC Manichakhao-1. This semi-dwarf variety doubles the yield of traditional Chakhao landraces, achieving an impressive 4.5–5.0 tonnes per hectare compared to the traditional yield of less than 2.0 tonnes per hectare. Additionally, it offers superior cooking quality and higher anthocyanin content, preserving the unique nutritional and cultural value of Chakhao.

Chakhao, Manipur’s celebrated black scented rice, is renowned for its mild, nutty flavor, distinctive aroma, and deep purple hue when cooked, attributed to its high anthocyanin content. A staple in religious feasts and ceremonies, this rice earned a Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2019 due to its unique qualities derived from Manipur’s pristine soil and environment. However, traditional varieties face challenges such as low yields and tall plant height (>150 cm), making them prone to lodging.

Developed by Dr. Konsam Sarika and her team at ICAR RC NEHR Manipur Centre, RC Manichakhao-1 addresses these limitations while maintaining the rice’s cultural and nutritional significance. The variety was officially approved for release in Manipur during the State Seed Sub-Committee meeting for Agricultural Crops on May 23, 2024, chaired by the then Commissioner (Agriculture), Government of Manipur.

The launch of RC Manichakhao-1 is poised to transform black rice cultivation by meeting growing global demand, particularly in Western markets, and capitalizing on its GI tag status. This development promises to boost farmer incomes and strengthen Manipur’s position as a hub for high-quality, specialty rice production.
