Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, has made a fervent appeal to social media influencers, intellectuals, and members of civil society to rally behind the ‘One Nation, One Election’ initiative, aiming to transform it into a broad-based national movement. He underlined its crucial role in enhancing democratic governance and expediting the country’s development trajectory.
Speaking at a public gathering in Bengaluru today, Shri Chouhan emphasized the negative consequences of frequent elections on administrative functioning and the optimal use of public resources. “The recurring cycle of elections results in a significant drain of time, energy, and public funds,” he said. “By synchronizing Lok Sabha and State Assembly elections every five years, we can bring about substantial savings and improve governance efficiency.”
The Minister pointed out that frequent elections necessitate repeated enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct, which often disrupts the implementation of ongoing government schemes and halts developmental activities. “This disruption not only affects the momentum of public welfare initiatives but also places a huge burden on the national exchequer,” he noted.
Shri Chouhan stressed that institutionalizing simultaneous elections will foster political stability, ensure better planning and implementation of policies, and ultimately serve the larger national interest. He urged stakeholders from all walks of life to engage in constructive dialogue and support the vision of ‘One Nation, One Election’ for a stronger and more vibrant democratic polity.
