CIL inks MoU with Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port for Dynamic illumination of Howrah Bridge to enhance the aesthetic appeal

Now, India’s iconic landmark, Howrah Bridge (known as Rabindra Setu since 1965), will come alive with dynamic illumination, offering a spectacular visual experience to all commuters, whether on foot or by vehicle. Dynamic illumination is chosen in a such a way which could highlight the structural brilliance, visual elegance of the bridge and gives a night-time visual treat.
In it’s Golden Jubilee celebration of Coal India Ltd(CIL), a Maharatna company and pride of Nation, joined hand with Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata (SMPK) to preserve country’s heritage and world’s seventh largest cantilever bridge- Rabindra Setu and dedicate to “City of Joy” by dynamic illumination.

In this connection, Memorandum of Understanding(MoU) was signed between CIL under the aegis of MoC and SMPK, an autonomous body under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, for dynamic illumination of Rabindra Setu with solar energy at Coal Bhawan, CIL Hq, Kolkata today.
An MoU was signed in presence of Shri PM Prasad, Chairman, CIL, Dr. Vinay Ranjan, Director (HR), Shri Alok Lalit Kumar, ED(Production), Shri O P Mishra, Executive Director(CD) and others officials of the company. Shri Rathendra Raman, Chairman, SMPK, Sri Samrat Rahi, Deputy Chairman, Shri Amit Kumar Kar, Chief Mechanical Engineer, Shri Amit Sanyal, Superintending Engineer (electrical) and others were present.
This dynamic illumination CSR project reflects CIL’s commitment to preserving heritage while embracing modernity to foster sustainable growth and building a socially strong relationship with stakeholders.
There will be amplification of the existing lighting of Rabindra Setu by enhancing volumetric lighting and introducing skeleton lighting, dynamic illumination with synchronized music show, which could transform the majestic structure into a glowing symbol of country’s iconic landmark and rich heritage.
Howrah Bridge opened in 1943 and the illuminated bridge will now stand not only as a functional marvel but also as a radiant symbol of Kolkata’s legacy and future. About 1 lakh vehicles and 1.5 lakh pedestrians commute in this bridge every day.

CIL and SMPK will jointly implement the project in the large interest of the society.
The dynamic light patterns are designed to reflect moods and occasions, bringing the bridge alive like never before.
