Title- Government of India, NSO is launching National Survey on Domestic Tourism Expenditure Survey(DTES) & National Household Travel Survey (NHTS)

The Government of India is conducting National Sample Surveys to collect the data on various socio-economic indicators employing scientific sampling methods since 1950.The Domestic Tourism Expenditure Survey’ (Schedule 21.1) survey of 80th Round of NSS scheduled to commence from 1st July 2025  & it will continue upto 30th June 2026.  Expenditure on domestic tourism of overnight trips collected through Domestic Tourism Expenditure Survey is an important component for preparation of Tourism Satellite Account (TSA), which is meant to measure goods and services according to international standards of concepts, classifications and definitions. Domestic Tourism Expenditure Survey of NSS 80th round is designed to collect detailed information on expenditure on domestic tourism along with some information on household characteristics, visitor characteristics and trip characteristics in relation to domestic overnight trips, required for preparation of Tourism Satellite Account (TSA) which will be done by the Ministry of Tourism (MoT).

The National Statistics Office (NSO) will conduct the first dedicated National Household Travel Survey (NHTS) in India during July 2025 to June 2026 based on the requirements of Ministry of Railways (MoR). It will provide valuable insights into how people move, the modes of transport they use, trip purposes, travel frequency, and other related factors. Information about individuals' public transport usage can be used to identify gaps in the current transit system, optimize routes, and adjust schedules. This data can inform decisions about where new transit routes should be established and how to improve accessibility to under served areas.The survey is aimed at collecting information on where, when, and why people travel, which is critical for making informed decisions on infrastructure projects and public transportation systems. The survey will provide critical data for understanding and improving the transportation systems that will aid in policy development and infrastructure planning.

To discuss the various aspects of survey, a three-day conference for officers of National Statistical Office(NSO), Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation who will be conducting the survey in the Western Region of Gujarat will be held from 18th June, 2025 at National Statistics office, Ahmedabad. As the Govt. of Gujarat will also be conducting the survey, the senior officers of the Directorate of Economics and Statistics will also be participating in the conference. The conference will be inaugurated by Shri Junaid Farooqui,the Dy. Director General & Regional Head of Gujarat (Western Region) of the Field Operations Division (FOD) of NSO in the presence of Shri Ravi Shankar Verma, Deputy Director at NSO Ahmedabad, Shri A.S.Chauhan Assistant Director at NSO Rajkot and Ms Shraddha Muley, Assitant Director at NSO Ahmedabad.
