Brahmaputra Board and Survey of India on 19 June 2025 formally signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance cooperation in survey activities and geospatial capacity building across the Brahmaputra and Barak river basins. The MoU which will remain in force for a period of five (5) years aims to support integrated flood and erosion management, drainage improvement, and infrastructure planning through the use of advanced survey technologies and data sharing mechanisms.
Highlighting the high-level commitment to this collaborative endeavor, the agreement was signed at a joint meeting at the Boards' Headquarters in the presence of Dr. Ranbir Singh, Chairman of the Brahmaputra Board. Shri Abhay Kumar, General Manager, Brahmaputra Board, and Dr. Mohan Kumar Stalin, Additional Surveyor General, Eastern Zone of Survey of India, were the signatories.
Under this MoU, Survey of India will assist Brahmaputra Board in various survey activities including aerial and topographic surveys, installation of GTS/benchmarks, and high-resolution mapping using modern techniques such as UAVs, GNSS, and LiDAR. Both parties also agreed to share spatial datasets and jointly use the Continuously Operating Reference Stations (CORS) network to ensure standardized, high-accuracy geospatial data.
The MoU further outlines collaborative efforts for technical training and capacity building of Brahmaputra Board personnel, supported by the National Institute for Geo-Informatics Science and Technology (NIGST), Hyderabad.
A Joint Working Group (JWG) comprising officials from both organizations will steer the implementation of the MoU, develop annual work plans, and monitor progress.
It is to be noted that the partnership between Brahmaputra Board and the Survey of India will significantly enhance the scientific and technological capabilities for managing water resources and mitigating flood-related challenges in the ecologically sensitive Northeastern region. A key aspect of this collaboration will be the parallel sharing of data between Brahmaputra Board and Survey of India, directly contributing to optimized work planning for effective river basin management.
