The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) organized a virtual flag-off for the first-ever export consignment of Jamun fruit(Kundana variety) from Karnataka to the United Kingdom on 19th June, 2025. This landmark export marks a significant step in promoting India’s traditional fruits from different regions in global markets. Notably, the Jamun fruits have been sourced directly from a Farmer Producer Organization (FPO), furthering APEDA’s commitment to empowering grassroots stakeholders. It may be noted that the realization for the farmers for the “Kundana” variety of Jamun from is nearly doubled, as the average realization in the domestic market was Rs. 50-60/kg, while from this export consignment they are getting an average price of Rs. 110/- per kg

The flag-off was attended by Chairman, APEDA, Shri Abhishek Dev in the presence of officials from the Department of Horticulture, Mango Board and the Regional Plant Quarantine Station. Chairman APEDA lauded the efforts of M/s. Anantha Organic Products Pvt. Ltd. for sourcing from FPOs and emphasized that such initiatives ensure direct benefit to farmers. He reaffirmed APEDA’s full support to exporters and reiterated that promoting indigenous fruits like Jamun on global platforms would boost awareness about India's diverse agri-produce and unlock international markets for local products..

Adding to the significance of the event, the consignment has been packed at the APEDA and Plant Quarantine approved Packhouse established by the State Government under the Department of Horticulture. This marks a pioneering utilization of the facility for exporting whole Jamun fruit, as exports so far have largely been in processed and seed powder forms.

Karnataka, one of India’s leading producers of Jamun—a fruit known for its rich medicinal value and health benefits—is now poised to become a major player in the international fresh fruit segment. This export not only represents a milestone for the state but also underscores the potential of India’s traditional horticultural products in global trade.

APEDA continues to lead efforts in promoting agriculture and processed food products’ exports through a series of initiatives including capacity building programs, Buyer-Seller Meets, product-specific campaigns, participation in trade fairs and the promotion of GI, ODOP and other unique products to new international destinations.
