Geological Survey of India celebrates the International Day of Yoga at the National monument of Charnockite, St. Thomas Mount

The International Yoga Day event was celebrated on 21st June 2025 with great enthusiasm by the Geological Survey of India State Unit: Tamil Nadu and Puducherry with wholehearted participation of officers and staff. At the beginning of the session Shri. B Ajaya Kumar, Dy. Director General SU: TNP, along with all officers and staff joined the live Yoga session led by Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi from Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, the massive demonstration held as part of the ‘Yoga Sangam’ initiative.

Further, all officers and staff observed the main Yoga event at the National Geological Monument Charnockite at St. Thomas Mount, Chennai, as per the directives of CHQ, Kolkata. The ceremony began with the opening remarks of Shri B. Ajaya Kumar, Deputy Director General, followed by the address of Shri. G Nagendran, Director (TC) and Shri. SN Mariappan, Director & HOO, SUTNP. During the inaugural address, Shri. B Ajaya Kumar, briefed on the history of observing this international day of yoga and he explained the theme of "Yoga for One Earth, One Health" assigned for International Yoga Day 2025, the longing divine desire of humanity. He highlighted that the noble step on observing the Yoga event was initiated by our honourable Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi in the year 2015 and now we are observing it in the 11th year. He further briefed on the significance of Yoga in provision of physical health fitness and subsequent mental health fitness to keep our body and mind stress free. He said that Yoga rejuvenates our body and keeps us calm. He added to promote yoga as a long term practice for physical and mental well-being in one of India’s most labor-intensive sectors and advised to involve family members also for this auspicious occasion.
Shri. B Ajaya Kumar, DDG, SU: TNP further informed that as per the directives of the Ministry of Mines & CHQ, a week long Awareness & Daily Boot Camp was organized at SUTNP from 14-20th June 20225 with wholehearted participation from all the officers and staff of GSI, SUTNP. Yoga experts from various institutions were invited to train different ‘Yaga Asanas’ during the Boot Camp sessions. Further, school children from National Matriculation Higher Secondary School, St. Thomas Mt. were invited on 20-6-2025 at GSI SUTNP to the Yoga session for making awareness among children.
Greeting the opportunity, Sannyasi Shiva Rishi, invited as the Chief Guest for the function, took over the main stage and addressed the gathering. Initially explaining about the importance of Yoga, he started the session by illustrating stretching exercises and Aasana in standing position and taking over to different breathing techniques, exercises to strengthen the lower abdomen and digestive system. He shared interesting insights on the significance of these exercises and his personal experience in the course of the session. Shri Souvik Chakraborty,Chemist proposed the vote of thanks.
