BIS, Madurai conducts Two-Days Residential Training Program on Learning Science via Standards for Science Teachers

Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Madurai, conducted a two-days residential training program on "Learning Science via Standards" for Science Teachers of BIS Standards Clubs. The residential program was conducted at Poppys Hotel, Madurai, on 18th and 19th June 2025, wherein 47 Science Teachers primarily from Government Schools and Colleges situated in the districts of  Dindigul,  Kanyakumari, Madurai, Perambalur, Sivaganga, Tenkasi, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Virudhunagar participated.

 

The program commenced with a welcome address by Shri S. D. Dayanand, Senior Director and Head, BIS, Madurai. He outlined the objectives of the program and emphasized the significance of the "Learning Science via Standards" initiative, which includes 52 curated lesson plans. He also encouraged the teachers to integrate these plans into their curriculum, fostering a scientific approach to help students understand concept of scientific principles in a easy manner.

 

Shri A. Arivazhagan, Joint Director, BIS, Madurai, shared insights on  BIS activities, covering standardization, certification schemes, testing. He also highlighted key features of the BIS Care App

 

Smt. Hemalatha P Panicker, Joint Director, BIS, Madurai, presented on Standard Promotion Activities and engagement with academia, covering the genesis and activities of Standards Clubs, as well as the concept of "Learning Science via Standards" and its methodology.

 

The first day of the training covered a range of topics, including the core activities of BIS, features of the BIS Care App, collaboration with academia, Genesis and functions of BIS Standard Clubs, and the crucial role of Science Teachers in promoting quality and standards.

 

 Dr. V. Arun, HOD, ECE Department, Anna University Regional  Campus, Madurai,  Key Resource Person of  BIS Madurai, presented lesson plans focusing on products like LPG stoves and Packaged Pasteurized Milk.

On the second day, workshop session convened. In this workshop participants were divided into groups and were assigned the task of identifying and presenting  scientific laws and principles related to everyday products, such as plastic feeding bottles, plain copier paper, iodized salt, high density polyethylene(HDPE) polypropylene woven sack, potable water bottles, wrought aluminium, earthenware crockeryware, hawai chappal. The program concluded with the distribution of certificates to all successful  participants. Participants visited M/s CIPET, Madurai. Dr. K. Prakalathan, Director & Head and Dr. Nalini R, Manager (Technical) explained the  testing procedures  and the scientific principles behind product testing as per Indian Standards and related it to Lesson Plans.

Since 2021, Bureau of Indian Standards has established over 10,000 Standards Clubs in educational institutions across India, including 345 in Southern Tamil Nadu. These clubs, supported by BIS through financial assistance and guided by appointed mentors, aim to instill a culture of quality awareness among students, highlighting the relevance of Indian Standards in everyday life. The standard clubs engage in various activities designed to empower students as informed consumers, utilizing tools like the BIS CARE APP for consumer empowerment. Consumers are requested to use BIS CARE APP before purchase of Gold Jewellery & ISI marked products including electronic products.
