Between April and June 2025, the port handled 17.186 million metric tonnes (MMT) of cargo, reflecting a robust growth of 21.21 per cent as compared to 14.2 MMT handled during the same period in the previous year. This significant performance underscores SMP, Kolkata’s operational efficiency and enhanced cargo handling capacity.

In addition to cargo volume, the port witnessed a notable increase in container throughput. In June 2025 alone, SMP, Kolkata handled 81,000 TEUs, marking a 25 per cent growth over the 65,000 TEUs recorded in June 2024.

The cumulative container handling during the April to June 2025 period stood at 234,270 TEUs, representing a remarkable 29.02 per cent increase compared to the first quarter of the previous financial year.

Several key commodities have demonstrated consistent upward trends during this period. Vegetable oil traffic rose to 1.095 MMT, registering a year-on-year increase of 33.21 per cent. The throughput of cooking coal reached 2.653 MMT, recording a growth of 34.28 per cent. Petroleum, oil and lubricant (POL) volumes also increased significantly, touching 2.495 MMT, with a growth rate of 14.45 per cent.

Commenting on the performance, Shri Rathendra Raman, Chairman, SMP Kolkata, stated that these results are not merely statistics but are a reflection of the relentless dedication and collaborative efforts of the entire SMP, Kolkata community. He added that the growth has been driven by synergy across departments and a shared commitment to excellence.

The Chairman acknowledged the leadership of Shri Samrat Rahi, Deputy Chairman and expressed his gratitude to all employees, workers, and stakeholders of the port. He also extended sincere thanks to the Eastern Railways, South Eastern Railways, Customs department, and the CISF unit posted at SMPK for their continuous cooperation and support, which have been crucial in reinforcing the port’s position as a key facilitator of India’s maritime trade.

The sustained upward trajectory of SMP, Kolkata reflects its sound strategic planning, ongoing infrastructural improvements and a strong focus on customer-oriented initiatives. With its dual operational systems—the Kolkata Dock System (KDS) and the Haldia Dock Complex (HDC)—the port continues to serve as a vital logistics gateway for eastern and northeastern India, while also supporting trade access for landlocked neighbouring countries such as Nepal and Bhutan.
