Union Minister for Communications and Development of North Eastern Region, Shri Jyotiraditya Scindia, interacted with the Gramin Dak Sevaks at the GDS Conference held in Bengaluru today and felicitated 15 Gramin Dak Sevaks for their excellent performance in the year 2024-25.
Speaking at the event, the minister said that there are 1.64 lakh post offices from Kashmir to Kanya kumari and Bharuch to Dharmanagar. The postal department is expected to soon become globally at the first place among service providers. We should be recognized as a profit-oriented department for the Central Government of India through our services. The minister also hailed the Karnataka Circle of Department of Posts for delivering around 200 crore mails and parcels in the last year and termed it as a commendable achievement.

Sharing his thoughts on the status and progress of the postal department, the minister said, there was a time when rural postal workers did not have umbrellas, stationery, shoes and other facilities. Since I took charge of this ministry, from modernizing the insignia of the Postal Department to designing uniforms for postal workers, we have brought many changes. These changes include distribution of printers, laptops, and kiosk facilities in post offices. We have also allowed the children of postal workers to enroll in Kendriya Vidyalaya schools.
As the head of this department, I have visited rural post offices and worked hard to give them a new touch. He said that efforts are being made to study the postal services of America, Germany, and Japan, and adopt the good technologies.
Appreciating the service of rural postmen, Minister Scindia said Postmen do not just deliver mail, but also convey their hopes and feelings. They know the on-goings of every family in the entire village. “Postal service is a public service. As the Minister of this department, I have considered you as my family. Similarly, you should consider the customers as your family and provide them with excellent service,” said the minister.

“Earlier, the postmen used to bring only letters. Now they bring banks. The Indian postal department is beyond comparison. There is no institution in any country in the world as wide and deep as the postal department. It is like a window to the world for the common people. As times change, our work style must change. We must increase innovation and productivity,” said the minister.
The Minister said that all the suggestions for the upliftment of the department will be implemented and the Department of Posts should be transformed into a customer-centric organization. The achievements of the Indian Postal Department should be known worldwide.
The program was attended by Secretary of the Department of Posts, Smt. Vandana Kaul, Member of the Postal Services Board, Smt. Manju Kumar, Chief Postmaster General of Karnataka Circle, Mr. K. Prakash and other senior officials.
