BIS Bengaluru Organizes Capacity Building Programme for Officials of the Department of Women and Child Development, Government of Karnataka Bengaluru

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Bengaluru Branch Office, organized a Capacity Building Training Programme on 16th July 2025 at the Karnataka Small Scale Industries Association (KASSIA), Vijayanagar, Bengaluru. The programme was conducted for officials of the Department of Women and Child Development, Government of Karnataka, to enhance their awareness and understanding of quality and safety standards related to women and child care.

The programme began with a welcome address by Smt. M Sushma Rao, Scientist-E and Head, BIS Bengaluru Branch Office. She highlighted this important initiative of BIS and shared the vision of its Director General, Shri Pramod Kumar Tiwari, IAS, to strengthen the implementation of Indian Standards across all levels of government, ensuring quality, safety, and reliability in public services and products. This programme aims to empower government officials with the knowledge and tools necessary to integrate quality standards into their daily operations. Smt. Rao also expressed sincere gratitude to  Dr. Shamla Iqbal, IAS, Secretary to Government, Department of Women and Child Development, Government of Karnataka, for her valuable support and encouragement towards the successful organization of the programme. She urged the participants to actively engage in the interactive sessions and apply the knowledge gained to enhance quality consciousness in their routine work, ultimately benefiting the public.

The inaugural address was delivered by Shri Raghavendra T, KAS, Director, Department of Women and Child Development, Government of Karnataka. He emphasized the critical importance of ensuring quality and safety in products and services under the Department’s purview. Shri Raghavendra highlighted the relevance of Indian Standards in key areas such as Infant Nutrition, Feeding Bottles, Safety of Toys, and Cooking Utensils, urging participants to make full use of the training.

Shri Karim Rajshekhar, Scientist-D & Joint Director, BIS Bengaluru, provided an overview of the Bureau of Indian Standards and encouraged officials to incorporate standards into government programmes to improve service quality and public safety. Smt. Premlatha Sinha, Scientist-D & Joint Director, BIS Bengaluru, conducted a technical session on feeding bottles, covering IS 5168:2018 for glass feeding bottles and IS 14625:2015 for plastic feeding bottles.

Subject experts Dr. S. Pressila Daissy and Dr. Manickam Tamilselvi led technical sessions on Infant Nutrition, Safety of Toys, Cooking Utensils, Medical Devices for Women and Child Care, and Medical Textile Products. The training saw enthusiastic participation from over 60 officials of the Department of Women and Child Development, Government of Karnataka, who actively engaged in discussions and shared their field-level experiences.

This initiative by BIS Bengaluru reflects its ongoing commitment to fostering a culture of quality and standardization. As part of this effort, a second Capacity Building Programme is scheduled on 18 July 2025 at Hotel Mayura Hoysala, 02, JLB Road, Mysuru – 570 005, for officials from other districts of Karnataka.
