Fisheries Infrastructure Development

The Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying is implementing a flagship scheme namely ‘Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana” (PMMSY) with an investment of Rs.20,050 crore in all States/ Union Territories for a period from financial Year 2020-21 to 2025-26 to bring about Blue Revolution through sustainable and responsible development of fisheries sector and welfare of fishermen. The development of fisheries infrastructure in form of Fishing Harbours, Fish Landing Centers and wholesale fish markets is one of the important areas supported under Pradhan Mantri Matsya Samapada Yojana (PMMSY). The Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying has approved the proposal of development/modernization of 26 fishing harbours, 22 fish landing centres and 21 whole sale fish market under PMMSY. The State/UT wise details of the projects approved during last five years of fishing harbour, fish landing centre and wholesale fish market under PMMSY are furnished at Annexure I. The State/UT wise details of fisheries development project approved under various central schemes are furnished at Annexure II.

The Department of Fisheries, Government of India under PMMSY supports cold chain infrastructure in the form of cold storages, ice plants, freezing and packing plants, fish transportation vehicles including refrigerated and insulated vehicles, fish kiosks, ice/fish holding boxes etc. that helps in strengthening of cold chain logistics for fisheries. So far, the Department of Fisheries, Government of India has approved cold chain projects/activities comprising 634 ice plants/cold storages, 6694 mobile fish kiosks, 27189 units of fish transportation facilities under PMMSY.

In order to enhance fish and seafood export competitiveness and higher price realization, the PMMSY supports a basket of interventions/activities along the fisheries value chain including quality fish production, expansion, diversification and intensification of brackish water aquaculture, promotion of export-oriented species, infusion of technology, robust disease management and traceability, training and capacity building, creation of modern postharvest infrastructure with seamless cold chain, development of modern fishing harbours and fish landing centres, etc. During the financial year 2023-24, India exported an all-time high volume of 17,81,602 MT of Seafood worth Rs. 60,523.89 crore
