KVIC Chairman Shri Manoj Kumar’s Visit to Tirupur Kindles a New Wave of Self-Reliance & Artisan Empowerment

Over 2985 Khadi Institutions engage 5 lakh artisans - 80% women; wages increased by 275%
In a resounding affirmation of Atmanirbhar Bharat and the spirit of Gramodyog, Shri Manoj Kumar, Hon’ble Chairman of the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), Ministry of MSME, Government of India, visited Tirupur, Tamil Nadu today and spearheaded a powerful initiative aimed at empowering rural artisans and revitalizing the legacy of Khadi. Addressing a vibrant gathering of artisans, entrepreneurs, and officials, Shri Manoj Kumar reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to realise Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision for a Viksit Bharat@2047, by strengthening livelihood through Khadi and Village Industries programmes.

On the occasion, Shri Manoj Kumar, Chairman, KVIC distributed a wide range of machineries and toolkits under the Gramodyog Vikas Yojana (GVY) including 556 machineries & toolkits to the 620 Artisans; 280 Electrical Pottery Wheels to 220 Pottery Artisans; 220 Sewing Machines with accessories to 220 Sewing Machine Operators; 4 sets of Tamarind Processing Machinery with 40 Tamarind Processing Toolkits to 40 Tamarind Processing Artisans; and 16 sets of Village Oil Extraction Machinery with toolkits to 80 Village Oil Extraction Artisans. These machineries and tools were provided to artisans engaged in various traditional crafts to enhance their productivity, quality, and income generation capabilities.

During the visit of the Hon’ble KVIC Chairman to Tamil Nadu, a Khadi Drama and Fashion Show was organized on 01st August 2025 by the State Office Chennai at Hindusthan College of Arts and Science, Coimbatore. Two Khadi-themed dramas - “Story of Khadi - A Time Travel by Tirupur Kumaran” and “Victory of Khadi”- were performed by students, followed by a Mega Khadi Fashion Show titled “Khadi for Nation, Khadi for Fashion – Khadi the Vogue.” The show featured designer garments from the Centre of Excellence for Khadi (CoEK), receiving a warm response from the students and other Audience. The fashion show was participated by Seven colleges from Coimbatore, Tirupur, Salem, and Sathyamangalam with 11 fashion themes. Among the participants, NIFT-TEA College of Knitwear Fashion, Tirupur won the 1st prize, followed by Kumaraguru College of Technology and PSG College of Technology. Cash prizes were rewarded to the winners. During the show, live demonstrations of Khadi Spinning, Weaving, Pottery-Making, and Khadi Product displays were also showcased at the event.

Highlighting the spectacular transformation of the Khadi sector under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, Chairman Shri Manoj Kumar said on this occasion, “Khadi, once the symbol of our freedom struggle, is now the fabric of economic freedom”. Inspired by the clarion call of “Khadi for Nation, Khadi for Fashion, Khadi for Transformation”, we are witnessing history being made.
KVIC Chairman praised the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) - KVIC’s flagship scheme that is enabling India’s youth to become job providers instead of job seekers. To bolster micro-enterprise creation, the Government has enhanced the project cost limits. Shri Manoj Kumar noted that the project cost ceiling has been doubled, now allowing up to ₹50 lakh for Manufacturing and ₹20 lakh for Services to empower entrepreneurs on a greater scale.
He also lauded the success of Honey Mission, where over 2.27 lakh bee boxes and 22,824 trained beekeepers have contributed to ecological and economic sustainability.
Shri Manoj Kumar encouraged artisans, especially youth and women, to establish new enterprises, innovate with local materials, and tap into national and international markets through exhibitions, fairs, and platforms like Khadi India Showrooms and India International Trade Fairs. “Khadi has become a movement of pride and progress. With the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s vision to take it from Local to Global, we are rewriting the story of rural India - with confidence, culture, and creativity,” he said.
The event in Tirupur symbolized not just distribution of tools - but the distribution of hope, dignity, and dreams. KVIC is not merely an Organisation; it is a catalyst for transformation, ensuring that every artisan’s hand becomes the engine of India’s progress.
Senior officers from KVIC, KVIB, Local Govt. and representatives’, local stakeholders from Khadi Institutions, Khadi artisans & their families, GVY beneficiaries & their families were present in the programme.
