Sagar Mitra and PMMSY in Andhra Pradesh

The Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Government of India has approved the proposal of the Government of Andhra Pradesh for engagement of 350 Sagar Mitras in coastal Villages of Andhra Pradesh under PMMSY. District-wise Sagar Mitras approved and engaged as reported by Government of Andhra Pradesh is furnished at Annexure-I.

The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India, provides Potential Fishing Zone (PFZ) advisories to the coastal states including Andhra Pradesh. Government of Andhra Pradesh has informed that the PFZ advisories so received are effectively disseminated to marine fishers through the Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs). Additionally, fishers and boat owners are able to access real-time information on fish shoals through the NABHMITRA mobile application. The PFZ information was disseminated to the fishers through voice messages/IVRS. The number of fishermen receiving the PFZ information, district wise as reported by the Government of Andhra Pradesh is furnished at Annexure-II.

The PMMSY has provision for insurance coverage to fishers that include ₹5 lakh for death or permanent total disability and ₹2.5 lakh for permanent partial disability. The premium is shared between the central and state governments, with no beneficiary contribution. The National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) has informed that Andhra Pradesh has come forward to avail the Group Accident Insurance Scheme (GAIS) under the PMMSY during the current financial year (2025-2026), covering 2,58,515 fishers with a premium of Rs.207,63,370.4/- Further, the Government of Andhra Pradesh has informed that the State is providing Ex-gratia of Rs.10.00 lakhs to the deceased fishermen families who died while in fishing.
