Directorate General of Training (DGT): DGT under the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), implements the Craftsmen Training Scheme (CTS) through a network of Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) for the youth of the country including in rural areas. In ITIs, craftsmen training is provided in 169 NSQF aligned trades. Each trade has a dedicated course curriculum.

DGT has introduced a course titled ‘Artificial Intelligence Programming Assistant’, under Craftsmen Training Scheme (CTS) in year 2024 to impart AI based skill training through ITIs and National Skill Training Institutes (NSTIs) to the youth of the country. The duration of course is one year and is aligned with NSQF level 3.5.

In addition, a 7.5-hour micro-credential, “Introduction to Artificial Intelligence (AI),” has been developed for all CTS trainees in ITIs, in collaboration with industry and academic experts.

Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY): MSDE is implementing PMKVY since 2015 to impart skill development training through Short-Term Training (STT) and up-skilling and re-skilling through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). The current version of PMKVY i.e., PMKVY 4.0, focuses on imparting training in futuristic and new-age courses including AI. Job role –wise details of candidates enrolled and trained in AI related job roles as on 30.06.2025 is placed at atAnnexure-1.

National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS): NAPS aims to promote apprenticeship training throughout the country. Initially launched in August, 2016, the scheme is currently being continued under its second phase. Under NAPS-2, the Government shares partial stipend support, limited to 25% of the minimum prescribed stipend payable to apprentices, subject to a maximum of ₹1,500 per apprentice per month during the training period. The stipend support is disbursed directly to the apprentices’ bank accounts through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) mechanism. Under NAPS, apprenticeship is being provided in several job roles including courses in Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Under AI related trades, a total of 1,480 apprentices have been engaged across the country under NAPS-2 from FY 2022-23 to FY 2025-26 (Upto June 2025). Under AI sector, prominent trades include, AI - Business Intelligence Analyst, AI - Data Engineer, AI - Database Administrator, AI - Machine Learning Engineer, AI – Data Quality Analyst, AI – Data Scientist, AI – DevOps Engineer, and Python AI Trainee.

The Government of India is incorporating Artificial Intelligence subject areas and training materials into the education and skilling ecosystem. This includes initiatives aimed at building AI awareness and literacy among school students and educators.

i) Directorate General of Training (DGT): DGT, under MSDE, implements the CTS through a network of ITIs for the youth of the country including in rural areas. At present, there are 14,615 ITIs established in the country, out of which, 10,954 ITIs are loacted in rural areas and 3,661 ITIs are in urban areas. Among the rural ITIs, 2,389 are Government ITIs and 8565 are Private ITIs.

ii) Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY): PMKVY Scheme has been implemented across the country including in rural areas. As on 30.06.2025,1,64,07,263 candidates have been trained/ oriented across the country under PMKVY Scheme including 7,17,347 trained/ oriented in IT-ITes Sector.

iii) National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS):A national portal (www.apprenticeshipindia.gov.in) for the scheme supplements the scheme’s effort to expand throughout the country, including in rural areas. Since June 2022, Pradhan Mantri National Apprenticeship Mela (PMNAM) facilitates candidates to avail opportunities in Apprenticeship training and facilitates establishment to identify potential candidates and in selection of Apprentices.

 The event is conducted every month on the 2nd Monday, in at least 1/3rd of the districts of each State. In addition, awareness workshops assist in promoting the scheme amongst various stakeholders throughout the country. Under NAPS-2, to encourage greater participation from establishments in apprenticeship training, the Ministry has simplified processes. Over 36,000 establishments have participated in 5,590 Prime Minister National Apprenticeship Melas (PMNAMs) since June, 2022.

iv)  The GoI is incorporating Artificial Intelligence subject areas and training materials into the education and skilling ecosystem. This includes initiatives aimed at building AI awareness and literacy among school students and educators. MSDE has launched a structured program called Skilling for AI Readiness (SOAR) on 22.07.2025 which seeks to bridge the digital divide by ensuring equitable access to AI education across geographies, thereby, supporting the national agenda of inclusive, future-ready skilling.

SOAR comprises three progressive 15-hour modules for students—AI to be Aware, AI to Acquire, and AI to Aspire—and one independent 45-hour module for teachers titled AI for Educators. The program introduces concepts such as AI basics, generative AI, AI in daily life, programming fundamentals, ethics, cybersecurity and future career opportunities.
