The ICMR-Regional Medical Research Centre (RMRC), Bhubaneswar, successfully hosted the ICMR-SHINE (Science & Health Innovation for the Nextgen Explorers) Initiative 2025 on 8th August 2025. The event was held as part of a nationwide celebration across all 28 ICMR institutes and field units to mark the birth anniversary of the legendary scientist, Prof. V. Ramalingaswami.

The SHINE programme aims to cultivate scientific curiosity and public health awareness among school students by offering them firsthand exposure to biomedical research and innovation. The event in Bhubaneswar witnessed the enthusiastic participation of around 400 students from classes 9 to 12, from various schools in and around the city.
The event was inaugurated virtually by Dr. Rajiv Bahl, Director General, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), who delivered an inspiring keynote address. Emphasizing the role of ICMR during the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Bahl highlighted ICMR’s contributions to vaccine development, diagnostic testing, and treatment protocols. He encouraged students to visit research institutions and think like scientists, echoing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal in Mann Ki Baat to make science a part of life of young minds.
He said, “Today is the day we want you to see a laboratory, to work and think like a scientist, to know what scientists do. Research and innovation mean finding and making new technologies that help society, like rapid testing for tuberculosis through DNA and RNA-based methods developed by ICMR.”
The programme also featured address by Dr. Sanghamitra Pati, Additional Director General, ICMR and Director, ICMR-RMRC Bhubaneswar. She shared insights into ICMR’s rich legacy and its vital role in tackling COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Pati emphasized that scientific research is not only about experiments but also about transforming lives and addressing health challenges faced by society.
The day-long event included interactive sessions, a series of engaging short films on:
• The legacy of ICMR-RMRC Bhubaneswar
• The story behind Covaxin development
• Drone-based medical delivery systems
• “Vishanu Yudh Abhyaas” – a module on epidemic preparedness
Students were taken on guided lab tours, shown live demonstrations, and participated in exhibitions of the Centre’s ongoing research. A quiz competition and scientist-student interactions allowed participants to experience science beyond textbooks and appreciate the impact of research on daily life.
The event concluded with certificate distribution, refreshments, and a lively selfie session with ICMR’s mascot Dr. Curio, leaving the students inspired and engaged.
The SHINE Initiative 2025 served as a significant step toward ICMR’s mission of nurturing the next generation of scientists and fostering a culture of innovation, health awareness, and public engagement in science.
